WSU alum CJ Allen sets personal best in 400 hurdles at USATF Last Chance Meet in Chula Vista...

With less than two weeks to go before the Toyota USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Washington State alum CJ Allen (left/photo by Paul Merca) and University of Washington senior Olivia Gruver tuned up for the national championships Sunday at the USATF Last Chance meet at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center.

Allen won the 400 hurdles in a personal best of 49.32, just 2/100ths of a second over the world championships standard, defeating Eric Cray of the Philippines, who ran at the 2017 IAAF world championships in London.  Cray was a distant second in 51.23.

With the victory, Allen enters the national championships with a modest three-meet winning streak that started at the Drake Relays, and continued at the Jim Bush meet in Long Beach, where he ran 50.14.

Gruver, who has the world championships standard already, finished third in the women’s elite pole vault, clearing 14-11.5 (4.56m), as Annie Rhodes won with a best of 15-1.5 (4.61m).

West Seattle HS graduate Chloe Cunliffe finished seventh with a best of 14-3.75 (4.36m).

BURNETT WALKS FASTEST KNOWN 50K ON TRACK SATURDAY IN SAN DIEGO...

Bellevue native Katie Burnett earned a qualifying mark for the IAAF World Championships in the 50 kilometer walk Saturday night at the National Invitational Race Walk Championship at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium.

Burnett crossed the line in a final time of 4:29:45.56, less than 15 seconds under the world championship standard of 4:30:00.

The mark is the fastest known time on the track.  According to records from USA Track & Field, the fastest time on a track is 4:34:46.5 set by Erin Taylor-Talcott on March 9, 2014 in Banks, Oregon.

Saturday's meet had the required minimum of three internationally certified judges, and there was drug testing, according to Burnett. Since it's the fastest known time on a track since the event was recognized by the IAAF in 2017, meet officials will file the paperwork necessary for world record ratification.
