THE WEEKEND AHEAD: Stumptown Twilight, Pan Am U20s, and Müller Anniversary Games...



Here’s what to watch this weekend:

Friday, a number of athletes with Washington ties head to Portland’s Lewis & Clark College for the Stumptown Twilight meet in a last-chance effort to post a qualifying time for next week’s Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships or sharpen up for the national championships.

Among those women entered Friday are Olympia native Brooke Feldmeier in the 800; Marta Pen Freitas of the Brooks Beasts, Pasco HS alum Marisa Howard, and Washington alum Eleanor Fulton (left/photo by Paul Merca) in the 1500; and Washington State alum Caroline Austin in the steeplechase. Fulton is also entered in the 5000.

On the men’s side, Washington volunteer coach and defending Olympic champ Matthew Centrowitz is entered in the 1500, along with Washington State’s Paul Ryan.

SLENNING AND ELLIOTT OFF TO COSTA RICA FOR PAN AM U-20 CHAMPIONSHIPS...

University of Washington freshmen Alex Slenning and Cass Elliott are off to San Jose, Costa Rica for the Pan Am Under-20 Track & Field Championships.

Both compete on Saturday, with Elliott running a semifinal in the 400 hurdles, while Slenning, the reigning national champion, runs in the final of the steeplechase.

Media partner Flotrack ($) will offer live streaming coverage of both the Stumptown Twilight and the Pan Am U20 meets.

WINGER ENTERED IN LONDON DIAMOND LEAGUE MEET... 

Vancouver native and three-time US Olympian Kara Winger is entered in the javelin at the two-day Müller Anniversary Games at London Stadium, which is the tenth stop on the 2019 IAAF Diamond League tour.

Winger, currently ranked number 7 in the world according to the current IAAF world rankings, throws on Saturday, the meet’s first day, where she’ll face a field that includes former Olympic champ Barbara Spotakova of the Czech Republic, Canada’s Liz Gleadle, and four athletes ranked ahead of her, including world #2 Christin Hussong of Germany.

Sunday, Washington alum Amy-Eloise Neale is entered in a deep women’s 5000 meter field that is headlined by new world mile record holder Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and the Nike Oregon Project, along with Margaret Kipkemboi of Kenya, who holds the world’s fastest time at that distance so far this season at 14:37.22.

Neale currently has the third fastest time by a British athlete this season at 15:11.11.

Washington volunteer coach Amos Bartelsmeyer is entered in the men’s mile, while incoming Husky freshman Carley Thomas is entered in the women’s 800.

Thomas is coming off two straight strong performances in Italy over the last two weeks, running a season best 2:02.55 in Lignano on July 9th, and a 2:02.56 clocking on July 16th in Padova.
