Scene shifts to British Columbia for a pair of meets in Burnaby & Victoria...


A number of athletes with Washington ties are headed north of the border to compete Tuesday and Thursday in Burnaby and Victoria, as they get ready for the national championships next weekend, or in some cases, to chase world championship automatic standards.

HARRY JEROME INVITATIONAL

Swangard Stadium in Burnaby once again hosts the Harry Jerome Invitational, which is Canada's longest running international invitational meet, and is part of World Athletics' Continental Tour as a Bronze level meet.

Among those entered on the women's side include four-time US Olympian Kara Winger (Paul Merca photo) from Vancouver in the javelin; Washington State's Brazilian standout Micaela De Mello in the 100 hurdles, Seattle's Rebecca Mehra and UW's Carley Thomas in the 800; Marta Pen Freitas of the Brooks Beasts and UW's Allie Schadler, Anna Gibson, Haley Herberg and Madison Heisterman in the 1500; and Katie Burnett in the race walk.

NCAA 1500 meter champ Joe Waskom is entered in the men's 800, along with NCAA 7th placer Nathan Green.

UW volunteer coach Sam Prakel is entered in the 1500, along with Washington State's Colton Johnsen. Isaac Green, Luke Houser, and Kieran Lumb of the Huskies are entered in the race, as well as David Timlin, who is training with the Brooks Beasts.

Washington's Sam Affolder and Gonzaga's Yacine Guermali are entered in a separate section of the 1500.

Vancouver native Daniel Nehnevaj, a US Olympic Trials qualifier, is entered in the race walk, while UW All-American Jayden White, and Connor Jost are both entered in the hammer.

VICTORIA INTERNATIONAL

On Thursday, the scene shifts to Victoria's Centennial Stadium for the Victoria Track Classic, which is also part of World Athletics' Continental Tour, as a Challenger Series meet.

Sam Prakel and Luke Houser both drop down in distance to 800 meters, while UW's Carley Thomas, Anna Gibson and Madison Heisterman will run the women's 800.

Nathan Green and Isaac Green of the Huskies are entered in the men's 1500, while Haley Herberg and Allie Schadler go in the women's 1500.

NCAA 1500 meter champ Joe Waskom and UW teammate Sam Affolder are listed as pacesetters in the men's 3000 steeplechase, which features the Huskies' Brian Fay, the Pac-12 steeple champ, as he goes for the world championships standard of 8:22.00.

Kara Winger is entered in the javelin.
