Trey Knight of USC (photo courtesy USC Athletics) and Ridgefield HS, the reigning Pac-12 champ, finished eighth in the hammer throw to highlight day 1 of the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon Wednesday.

Knight threw a best of 232-0 (70.73m) in the fourth round, while Washington's Jayden White was one spot out of a scoring position in ninth with a mark of 229-7 (69.99m).

In other finals, Gonzaga's James Mwaura was 15th in the 10000 meter run in 28:29.58, while Washington's Kieran Lumb was 17th in 28:36.31.

Washington State's Jacob Englar finished 17th in the pole vault with a best of 17-4.5 (5.30m), while Capital HS/Olympia grad Colby Wilson of Montana State was 20th at 16-10.75 (5.15m).

In qualifying action, all three University of Washington runners--Nathan Green, Luke Houser, and Joe Waskom advanced to Friday's finals in the 1500 meters, a feat never accomplished in school history.

Green had the second fastest time of the day, running a personal best 3:37.46 in heat 1, and in the process, broke the school record of 3:37.51 set earlier this season by Luke Houser. Joe Waskom finished second in heat 2 in a personal best 3:39.45, while Houser was fourth in 3:39.60.

While there is no official record kept at the University of Washington on the number of times three athletes in the same running event have qualified for the finals at the NCAA championships in a race that required heats, this marks the third time in Husky coach Andy Powell's career that he has qualified three athletes to the finals in the 1500 meters, turning the trick twice while he was an assistant coach at Oregon.

Issaquah HS alum Jacob Brueckman of Colorado State was ninth in heat 2, running 3:40.82.

In the 3000 steeplechase, Kenneth Rooks of BYU by way of College Place HS in Eastern Washington near Walla Walla, ran the second fastest time of the day, clocking a personal best 8:24.88 to win the first heat.  In doing so, he ducked under the USATF qualifying standard of 8:29.00.

Washington State's Colton Johnsen also made the finals, grabbing the final time qualifier by running a personal best 8:31.64 to finish seventh in the heat won by Rooks.

Washington's Cass Elliott finished finished fifth in his heat of the 400 hurdles, running 50.50.

The Huskies' Ollie Thorner stands 18th after the first day of the decathlon with a score of 3805.
