WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Markovc, Kerr & Pen Freitas clinch world champs spots at their nationals...

With the end of Sunday's national championship meets around the world, the qualification period for the World Athletics championships in less than three weeks closed, and while our coverage was locked in on the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, there were a number of athletes with Washington ties competing in various national championships.

Here's the recap:

MARKOVC WINS BRITISH 5000M TITLE...

In Birmingham, Glacier Peak HS and University of Washington alum Amy-Eloise Markovc (photo courtesy British Athletics) won the British 5000 meter title on Saturday, running 15:37.23 to outsprint Jessica Judd, who ran 15:38.39.

Markovc had the world championship standard which she set at the Tokyo Olympics last year, so she had to lock up her spot to Eugene with a top three finish at the nationals.

In the men's 1500, Josh Kerr of the Brooks Beasts finished third in the men's 1500, running 3:40.63.

According to Beasts coach Danny Mackey, Kerr, who has the world championship standard already, was told by British Athletics officials that he's officially on the team earlier today, as the third person on the British squad is a discretionary selection (top two finishers who have the standard, plus a discretionary pick).

Former Husky Jack Rowe was third in the men's 5000, running 13:45.30, while UW volunteer coach Tim Duckworth was fourth in the long jump at 25-6 (7.77m).

Current Husky Jami Schlueter dropped out of the decathlon after getting disqualified in the 110 hurdles to start day 2. He competed in the discus and pole vault, then retired before the start of the ninth event, the javelin.

CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS...

North of the border in Langley, BC, Roan Allen of the Huskies was fourth in the men's javelin at the Canadian championships as he threw (67.18m).

Washington's Kieran Lumb was third in the men's 1500, running 3:57.31 in a tactical race. In the women's 1500, Madison Heisterman of the Huskies was eighth in 4:21.96.

OTHER CHAMPIONSHIPS...

Marta Pen Freitas of the Brooks Beasts won the Portuguese title in the 1500, running 4:12.38.  Pen Freitas, who already owned the standard in the 1500 when she ran 4:04.15 at the Olympics last year, clinched a berth for the world championships with her win.
