THE WRAP: CJ Allen wins at ATL stop in Nashville; UW alum Markovc sets personal best in 3000 in Morocco...

NASHVILLE--As the days get closer to the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, the pros are starting to heat up.

At the Music City Track Carnival stop of the American Track League circuit at the Vanderbilt Track Facility on the campus of Vanderbilt University, Washington State alum CJ Allen (Paul Merca photo) got himself a victory to highlight results of Washington athletes competing in the nationally televised meet Sunday.

Allen won the 400 hurdles in 49.39, cruising comfortably ahead of Amere Lattin, who was second in 49.94, and Eric Cray of the Philippines in 50.29.

In the women's 400 hurdles, Washington alum Gianna Woodruff finished third in a time of 54.63, her second fastest time of the season.

Reigning world record holder and Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin won in a world leading time of 51.61.

There were reports that the times from the women's 400 hurdles may be thrown out because some hurdles were placed on the wrong lines, but for the time being, the times stand.

In the men's one mile, Gonzaga's Yacine Guermali ran the fastest time by a Gonzaga team member, clocking 4:01.23 in finishing fifth.

The men's 110 hurdles saw Washington State alums Nick Johnson and Sam Brixey finish sixth and seventh in 13.84 and 14.07.

In the women's 1500, Seattle resident Rebecca Mehra ran 4:08.59 to finish eighth, while Camas native Alexa Efraimson ran 4:19.83 and was 15th.

In one of the three preliminary heats in the women's 100, Federal Way HS grad Hannah Cunliffe finished fifth in 11.51, and did not advance to the finals.

In Rabat, Morocco, Washington alum Amy-Eloise Markovc finished just short of the victory in a hard fought 3000 meter race Sunday against Kenya's Mercy Cherono at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d'Athlétisme, the fourth stop in the Wanda Diamond League circuit.

The Glacier Peak HS standout and British Tokyo Olympian stayed in the chase group behind the pacesetter before going towards the front in the last kilometer.

With one lap to go, she dashed
to the front and tried to run the kick out of Cherono, but the former world cross country champion responded and took the lead with about 50 meters to go,

Markovc make a late charge but ran out of real estate, as Cherono won in 8:40.29, to Markovc's personal best of 8:40.32, eclipsing her previous personal best of 8:47.67 set at last year's Nike Prefontaine Classic.

Reigning Olympic champion and former Pullman resident Katie Nageotte, who has struggled so far in the outdoor season after a bout with Covid-19, did not clear a bar, bowing out at the opening height of 14-1.25 (4.30m).

Nageotte's training partner and two-time world indoor champ Sandi Morris took the victory at 15-3 (4.65m).

The Wanda Diamond League tour moves to Rome for the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea meet on June 9th.
