Connell's Ashton Riner of BYU wins NCAA javelin title...

EUGENE--
Connell High School standout Ashton Riner (BYU Athletics photo) of Brigham Young University used a big first round throw of 191-1 (58.28m) to win the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships as day 2 of the meet concluded Thursday at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Riner, a US Olympic Trials qualifier last year and the collegiate leader going into the meet at 198-0 (60.36m) was never really threatened, though runner-up Maddie Harris of Nebraska got close with a third round throw of 189-3 (57.69m).

Washington State's Valentina Barrios Bornacelli set a personal best in round 2, throwing 172-4 (52.53m), then set another PR in round 3 throwing a best of 177-3 (54.03m) to finish eighth.

Much as she did at the winter 2021 Pac-12 cross country championships, Washington's Haley Herberg tried to run away from the field and built a lead of nearly 25 seconds in the 10000, but ended up getting reeled in with six laps to go.

Herberg finished seventh in a time of 33:20.33, as Alabama's Mercy Chelangat won in 32:37.08.

Washington's Makenna Barton finished 15th in the pole vault, clearing 13-3.5 (4.05m) in her first appearance at the national championships.

In qualifying action, Woodinville native Olivia Markezich of Notre Dame ran a personal best in the steeplechase, running 9:40.81 to finish second in her heat.

Former Seattle Pacific All-American Kaylee Mitchell of Oregon State also set a personal best in winning the second heat in 9:41.51, which was the fifth fastest time of the day.

Both Markezich and Mitchell advance to Saturday's finals in the steeplechase.

Anna Gibson of the Huskies finished seventh in her heat of the 1500, running 4:22.42.

Washington's Carley Thomas had the ninth fastest time of the day in the 800, but finished sixth in her heat, running 2:03.44 and did not advance.

In the 200 meters, Garfield HS product Iman Brown of Oregon ran 22.96 to finish fifth in her heat.

The conclusion of the decathlon saw Washington's Ollie Thorner finish 15th with a final score of 7473 points.

He ran 15.78 in the 110 hurdles, threw the discus 131-8 (40.15m), cleared 15-9.25 (4.81m) in the pole vault, threw the javelin 168-6 (51.36m), and took fourth in the 1500 in 4:24.59.

Arkansas' Ayden Owens-Delerme won the decathlon, tying the meet record set by Oregon's Ashton Eaton of 8457 points.

Friday will see Washington's Ida Eikeng start off in the women's heptathlon, and the conclusion of the men's portion of the meet, highlighted from a Washington perspective by the 1500 meters, where the Huskies have three entries in the finals--Luke Houser, Nathan Green and Joe Waskom, a feat never accomplished in school history in a running event that involved heats at the national championship meet.
