NCAA qualifier Kristen Garcia wins Gonzaga Dual in Spokane...
SPOKANE--Two-time NCAA cross country qualifier Kristen Garcia (Paul Merca photo) led a near sweep of the first five places as the 23rd ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs scored a decisive 16-43 win over Eastern Washington in the Gonzaga Duals at the Wandermere Golf Course late Friday afternoon.
Garcia ran 12:51 over the 4k course, as the Zags had the first four across the line.
Behind Garcia was Rosina Machu in 12:52, Brittney Hansen in 13:09, and Oregon grad transfer Caramia Mestler in 13:15.
Makenna Edwards rounded out Gonzaga's scorers in sixth at 13:24.
Nattie Ruzauskas led Eastern in fifth in 13:19. Following her were Ellie Linnenburger in 7th at 13:35, Lilly Fetzer, who won the Clash of the Inland Northwest last week in Cheney was eighth in 13:37.
Eastern's scorers were rounded out by Jenni Bissell in 11th at 13:45, and Maddie Drennen in 12th at 13:48.
In the men's 8k race, the 16th ranked Zags did not need their top runners, as they were held out for a second straight meet.
Bryce Cerkowniak (23:14) and Sam Geiger (23:21) led the charge for Gonzaga with their 1-2 finish, with Cerkowniak getting his second win in a row, after winning last week in Cheney.
Nicola DeMartino was fourth in 23:30, followed by Jackson Lyne in sixth at 23:37, and Jeremiah Mackie was the fifth scorer in eighth at 23:48.
Noah Hasselblad was the first Eagle across the line in third at 23:24. Cameron Stuard was seventh in 23:41, followed by Jesus Herrejon in 17th at 24:38.
Anthony Carlascio was 18th in 24:50, and Jamie Christner rounded out the scorers in 19th at 24:56.
The Zags won the dual by a count of 19-42.

NATIONALLY RANKED VIKINGS OPEN SEASON AT CWU INVITATIONAL IN YAKIMA...
The nationally-ranked Western Washington University cross country program will be in action this weekend opening the 2022 season at the Central Washington University Invitational at Apple Ridge Run in Yakima, along with Seattle Pacific, which opened their season last weekend.
WWU heads into the 2022 campaign with both squads ranked nationally in the USTFCCCA pre-season coaches poll. The women's team received a number 20 national ranking and the men checked in at number 30.
Saturday's racing schedule is scheduled to begin at 11 am with the women's 4K and follow with the men's 6K at 11:40 am. The CWU Invitational returns to Apple Ridge run for the first time since the 2019 season.
