COLUMBIA, Missouri--Eastern Washington's men's cross country team finished 14th in the 22-team field, while its women's squad took 11th at the Gans Creek Classic, hosted by the University of Missouri Friday morning at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
Noah Hasselblad (EWU Athletics photo) was the top overall finisher for the Eagles for the third consecutive meet, as the sophomore from Belfair crossed the line in 31st place in a time of 24:21 over 8k.
He was followed by Cameron Stuard in 52nd in 24:39, then Marcus Lemon in 129th at 25:34.
Jesus Herrejon was 145th at 25:42, and Anthony Carlascio was 149th at 25:45, giving the Eagles a 1-5 split of 84 seconds.
Ninth ranked Iowa State won the men's team title with 26 points, as the Cyclones placed all five scorers in the top 11, led by individual winner Ezekiel Rop in 23:35.
Big Sky foe Weber State was ninth with 212 points.
"Cameron ran a really solid race, held on to Noah for the majority of it and kept strong with his pack when Noah pulled away to run a personal best himself. Those two really pulled our team along", said EWU cross country coach Sam Read.
In the women's 6k race, Lilly Fetzer from Yakima led the way for Eastern for the second meet this season, finishing 57th in 21:44. She was followed by Madi Carr in 71st at 21:54, then Faith Martinez in 86th at 22:07.
Jasmin Muneton was 91st in 22:12, and Jenni Bissell was 96th in 22:17.
The Eagles had a solid 1-5 split of 33 seconds.
"Lilly pulled that pack through and had a huge finish in that last 1k to really boost our team score and finish higher than we were projected to. Madi Carr had a great race working right off of Lily. Faith Martinez, great race for her first 6k of her career, being a freshman in this big environment, really showed up for us," said Read.
28th ranked Illinois won the team title with 54 points, led by overall winner Olivia Howell's time of 20:22. Big Sky foe Weber State was fifth with 186 points.
The rest of the Eastern Washington squad who did not travel will compete in Saturday's Whitman Open in Walla Walla.
