Markovc eighth in women's 5000 as Wanda Diamond League finals begin in Zürich...

ZÜRICH, Switzerland--
The final stop of the Wanda Diamond League tour began Wednesday evening with an outdoor street meet that featured six finals in a unique setting in front of the Zürich Opera Houseon Sechselautenplatz, one of the city's most famous squares on the shores of Lake Zürich.

In the women's 5000 at the Weltklasse Zürich meeting, Washington alum Amy-Eloise Markovc (Paul Merca photo) finished eighth in a time of 15:28.24 (listed as 15:29 because of the oversized temporary 563 meter track), as Beatrice Chebet led a 1-2 Kenyan finish in a time of 14:31.03 (14:32) in front of Margaret Kipkemboi's 14:31.52 (14:32).

The other five winners on the first night of the Wanda Diamond League finals included Joe Kovacs of the USA in the men's shot put; Chase Ealey of the USA in the women's shot; Kenya's Nicholas Kipkorir in the men's 5000; Australia's Nina Kennedy in the women's pole vault; and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi in the men's high jump.

The meet resumes Thursday at the Letzigrund Stadium, where the remaining 26 Diamond League titles will be decided.

Josh Kerr of the Brooks Beasts is entered in the men's 1500 Thursday, while Vancouver native Kara Winger goes in the final meet of her pro career in the javelin.

Washington alum and world championships finalist Gianna Woodruff gets a spot in the women's 400 hurdles, as does Washington State alum CJ Allen in the men's 400 hurdles, despite losing a personal best of 47.96 in the Brussels Diamond League meet due to a trail leg violation.

The winner of each Diamond League final gets an automatic bye into next year's world championships in Budapest, assuming the winner's federation doesn't have an athlete in that event (defending world champion) with a bye.

Entering the Diamond League finals, Kerr is in eighth place in the 1500 with 9 points, and Allen stands seventh with 13 points in the 400 hurdles.

Winger is in second in the javelin with 18 points, and Woodruff is in sixth place in the 400 hurdles with 14 points.
