Carstens leads the way for Saint Martin's at San Francisco State Invite...

SAN FRANCISCO--
Both of Saint Martin's cross country teams scored identical fourth place finishes Friday afternoon at the San Francisco State Invitational at Golden Gate Park.

Alauna Carstens (Paul Merca photo), the GNAC women's athlete of the week last week after winning the John Payne/Curtis Invitational at Chambers Creek Park, led the charge for the Saints, as the freshman from Shelton HS finished fifth over the 6k course in a time of 21:49.

Behind her was Cassidy Walchak-Sloan, who did not run Saturday, as she finished seventh in 21:58.

She was followed by Sara Sabra in 12th in 22:19, then Alisha Saucedo in 30th at 23:13, and Naomi Hartley in 38th at 23:42, giving the Saints a 1-5 split of 1:53.

Kira Gupta-Baltazar of the University of San Francisco won the race in 21:32.

Concordia/Irvine won the meet with a score of 57, followed by Cal State East Bay at 58, then GNAC rival Simon Fraser at 59, followed by Saint Martin's at 85.

In the men's 8k, Isaac Cortes was Saint Martin's top finisher in 13th place in 25:41. Two places behind him was Kainalu Pagente in 25:45.

Michael Harwell was 30th in 26:14, followed by John Farrell in 31st at 26:15, and Eli Dale was 35th in 26:19. The Saints finished with a 1-5 split of 38 seconds.

Simon Fraser took the team title with a perfect 15, led by winner Charlie Dannart in 24:43.

Concordia/Irvine finished second with 62 points, followed by Cal State East Bay with 105, then Saint Martin's at 109.

The Saints return home to prepare for the NCAA Pre-Nationals in two weeks at Chambers Creek Park in University Place.
