WWU men jump to highest ranking this season in latest USTFCCCA D2 coaches' poll...

NEW ORLEANS--
The pollers giveth and the pollers taketh.

Last Saturday's Lewis Crossover proved to be good for Western Washington's men's squad (Paul Merca photo) after their third place team finish, and not so good for their women's team, which placed sixth.

Based on their third place finish where they beat four teams ranked ahead of the Vikings, the voters of the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II coaches poll moved Western Washington up to number 17, nine spots better than their position in last week's poll.

This is the highest ranking for the Vikings so far this season, after starting at number 30 during the preseason poll.

There was no change in the nation's top five men's teams after last week's meets. The top five squads as voted by the coaches, are in order: Colorado School of Mines, Adams State, Grand Valley State, Wingate, and Lee (Tennessee).

The voters rewarded GNAC member Simon Fraser after winning the San Francisco State Invitational with a perfect 15 by ranking the Red Leafs number 20.

The Western Washington women fell ten spots to number 28 after they finished sixth at the Lewis Crossover.

Like the men's poll, there were no changes in the nation's top five teams. Those squads are in order: Adams State, Grand Valley State, Colorado School of Mines, UC-Colorado Springs, and Augustana (South Dakota).

The Vikings are the only GNAC school in the women's top 30.

Western Washington returns to action, along with almost all teams from the GNAC next Saturday at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet at Chambers Creek Park in University Place.
