Redhawk women win Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem...

In Salem, Oregon, the Seattle University women's team won the team title at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational Saturday morning at Bush Park, squeezing out a 70-78 decision over the University of Hawaii.

Freshman Caitlyn O'Neil (photo courtesy SeattleU Athletics) led the way for the Redhawks with her seventh place finish over the 5k course in 18:18.

Right behind her was teammate Lilianne Hargreaves in eighth at 18:22, followed by Azalea Groleau in 11th at 18:27. Grace Much was 18th in 18:40, and Emily Harris was 34th in 19:12, as the Redhawks had a 54 second 1-5 split.

Seattle Pacific finished seventh with 185 points, led by All-American Annika Esvelt, who finished ninth in 18:22.

Kara Styblova of Portland State was the individual winner in 17:32.

In the men's 8k race, SeattleU finished fifth with 141 points, while Seattle Pacific was tenth with 254 points, as the University of Portland won with a low of 29 points.

Alex Franklin was the top runner for SeattleU in 15th place in a time of 24:56. Gus Harquail was 25th in 25:15, followed by Heziekiah Goodwin in 41st at 25:42, then Lance Mason in 52nd at 25:58, then Parker Wagnild in 76th at 26:45.

Seattle Pacific's top runner was Brennan LeBlanc in 28th at 25:23.


In Walla Walla, Eastern Washington placed seven runners in the top ten to easily win the women's 6k at the Whitman Open, scoring 22 points.

The Eagles' Kaylin Sheley won the race in 22:42, followed by Amanda Nygard in third at 23:31. Anna Harrison was fourth in 23:52, followed by Rylee Brandon in sixth at 24:05, and Nicole DeHerrera in eighth at 24:45.

Beatrice LeGore was Central Washington's top runner in 14th at 25:18, as the Wildcats finished fifth with 111 points.

The men's 8k race saw Central Washington finish fourth with 80 points, led by Ty Savely, who was ninth in 27:14. Eastern Washington's top runner was Alec Kness in eighth in 27:14.

Ben Kerr of the University of Puget Sound won in 26:38, while Whitworth won the team title with 43 points.


In University Place, Saint Martin's scored a close 25-30 decision over Western Washington to win the women's team title at the John Payne/Curtis Invitational at Chambers Creek Park.

Alauna Carstens (Paul Merca photo) of the Saints won the 5k race over part of the course that will be used for the NCAA Division II cross country championships in December as well as the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in three weeks.

Carstens ran 18:44, with teammate Sara Sabra taking second in 18:55, and Alisha Saucedo third in 19:41.

Nationally ranked Western Washington, which held out their top runners from the meet as they prepare for next week's Lewis Crossover in Romeoville, Illinois, was led by Sidra Miller, who was fourth in 19:43.

In the men's 8k, the Vikings won the team title, easily outdistancing Saint Martin's by a 19-36 count.

Sean Sands was the top WWU finisher in 25:55 to take second. Drew Weber was third in 26:15, followed by Will Henry in 26:27.

Kainalu Pagente was Saint Martin's top runner in fifth at 26:28.

Unattached runner Leo Rutledge was the individual winner in 25:48.

All four Washington GNAC schools will return to Chambers Creek in three weeks for the NCAA Pre Nationals meet.
