Eastern Washington hires Jonina Brinson and Majesty Tutson to work with jumps, multis & throws...

CHENEY--New Eastern Washington University director of track & field Erin Tucker announced his first two hires Saturday with the addition of Jonina Brinson and Majesty Tutson to his staff.

Brinson (photo courtesy Bethune-Cookman Athletics), who will coach the jumps and the multi-events, comes to Eastern Washington from Division III Buena Vista University in Iowa, where she was the head coach since the 2021 season, after joining the staff the year before as an assistant coach.

In each of her two seasons, she led the women's outdoor track and field team to its highest point total at the A-R-C Championships, and the 2022 indoor team posted its highest finish since 2013. In two years, she coached the Beavers to a combined 18 all-conference performances, including four conference champions and four All-American finishes.

"Adding a head coach to the staff is something that I hoped to do before I arrived, and I hit a home run with Jonina. Her passion, enthusiasm, and drive along with her head coach experience made this an easy choice," said Tucker

Brinson was a decorated student-athlete at both the University of Mobile (Ala.) and Bethune-Cookman University in Florida.  She was a 10-time NAIA All-American (indoor and outdoor) and a two-time NAIA national champion in the long jump while at Mobile.  She set 11 indoor and outdoor school records and was named the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Track Athlete of the Year in 2016 and the SSAC Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 2017.

Tutson (photo courtesy University of New Orleans Athletics) was most recently the throws coach at the University of New Orleans.

At UNO, Tutson coached two conference champions in the men's and women's hammer, plus two runner-up's in the women's discus and men's weight throw, in addition to a women's discus school record and a men's discus regional qualifier.

Before UNO, she was at Alabama State where she started as a graduate assistant in 2014 before being elevated to a full-time assistant in 2016. At Alabama State, she helped the Hornets to 11 indoor SWAC championships, seven outdoor SWAC Championships, and 12 individual conference champions.

Tutson earned her undergraduate degree at Iowa, where she was a decorated thrower from 2009-13. She qualified for the NCAA championships in the discus in 2013. She was a two-time Big Ten Conference runner-up in the discus.

"I talked to several coaches during my search and Majesty's name kept coming up from coaches in different circles. In our first conversation, I was extremely impressed and knew her personality and experience are what we need here at Eastern," said Tucker.

Brinson replaces Dave Nielson, while Tutson replaces Marcia Mecklenburg.
