NEW ORLEANS--
Boosted by performances by the Husky milers, along with 800 meter runner Cass Elliott and pole vaulter Jacob Englar, the University of Washington men's track and field team finds itself for the first time in program history, ranked the number one team in NCAA Division I after the release of the weekly National Track & Field Rating Index by the USTFCCCA.

Thanks to Friday's invitational mile results at the Dempsey, Joe Waksom (No. 1, 3:51.90), Brian Fay (No. 2, 3:52.03), Nathan Green (No. 3, 3:52.76), Kieran Lumb (No. 4, 3:53.83) and Luke Houser (No. 9, 3:55.98) all rank among the top-10 nationally with Waksom, Fay, Green and Lumb in the top-5.

Cass Elliott's school record time of 1:46.93 ranks fourth in the NCAA descending order list, while Jacob Englar's vault of 18-1.25 is number 10 in the D1 list this season.

The rest of the national top five teams in order include: number 2 Texas Tech, Arkansas at 3, Tennessee at 4, and Georgia at 5.

Teams from the Pac-12 in the top 25 include number 14 USC, number 17 Stanford (former number 1), and number 22 Oregon.

Washington’s previous high-water mark was number 2 in 2008.

On the women's side, the Huskies, who sat at number 2 in the first national ranking index, dropped down to number 15, despite top ten marks by Carley Thomas (#6 in the 800, 2:03.64), Anna Gibson (#2 in the mile, altitude converted 4:31.00 at New Mexico), Sophie O'Sullivan (#10 in the 3000, 9:03.91), and pole vaulters Nastassja Campbell and Sarah Borton (both tied for number 7 at 14-2.75/4.34m).

The nation's top five women's track teams according to the index are in order: Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Oregon.

Other Pac-12 teams in the national top 25 include number 9 Stanford, number 12 USC, and number 21 Oregon State.

Both Washington squads have not contested a distance medley relay so far this season, which contributes points in the national index.

The USTFCCCA track and field rating index is comprised of marks reported to the TFRRS site. This objective list is compiled solely of current qualifying marks from the 2023 indoor track & field season.
