WSU's Maribel Caicedo runs world leading time in the 60 hurdles to win Cougar Classic...

SPOKANE--
Washington State senior transfer Maribel Caicedo (Paul Merca photo)`pulled off the surprise of the meet as she set a new Washington State University record in the 60 hurdles Friday to highlight the Cougar Classic at The Podium.

Caicedo, who transferred to Washington State after competing at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she was a multi-time Conference USA champion indoors and outdoors, got the day started by setting a personal best of 8.20 in the qualifying round. In the process, she broke her own Ecuadorian national record of 8.22 which she set last year in Albuquerque.

In the finals, she was pressed by her teammate Michaela De Mello, but held on for the win in yet another personal best of 8.05, while De Mello finished second in 8.20.

In addition to the fastest collegiate time so far in this young season, Caicedo currently holds the fastest time in the world so far.

Oregon's Tokyo Olympian in the sprint relay Micah Williams won the men's 60 in 6.54, just off the time of 6.48 set at last year's meet.

The Cougars also got wins on the day from Mason Lawyer in the men's 200 (21.52), Ronald Grueso Mosqquera (56-10.75/17.34m) and Nana Gyedu (50-2/15.29m) in the men's and women's shot put competitions.

Washington State's distance squad competes Saturday at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle.
