WEEKEND ROUNDUP: UW's Gibson, WSU's Caicedo shine at New Mexico Team Open...

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico--
In all the excitement of what happened Friday night in Seattle at the UW Invitational, Washington's Anna Gibson (Paul Merca photo) put up a standout performance in the rarefied air at the Albuquerque Convention Center in winning the women's mile on day one of the New Mexico Team Open meet.

Gibson, who was the only Husky to travel over the weekend, ran against a field of six University of New Mexico runners to take the victory in 4:37.03.

New Mexico's Gracelyn Larkin and Sarah Eckel were the two designated pacesetters in the race, taking the field through the first four laps in 68.22 and 2:18.92, before Gibson moved to the front before the kilometer mark.

Running solo for the last 600+ meters, Gibson ran the last 400 in 68.46 to cross the line in 4:37.03, which with the allowance for Albuquerque's altitude of 5312 feet, converted the time to 4:31.00, which briefly was the top time in NCAA Division I.

Gibson's time is listed on the TFRRS website, which is used to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Division I championships in March at 4:31.00, behind Katelyn Tuohy of North Carolina State's 4:24.26, run Friday night in New York.

Washington State traveled their sprint, jumps, and throws group to New Mexico, and had strong performances on Saturday.

UTEP transfer Maribel Caicedo (8.14, first-place) and Micaela De Mello (8.29, third-place) each hit the podium in the women's 60m hurdles.

The Cougars' 4X400m relay team of Renee Yang, Jasneet Nijjar, Jada Van Staten, and Elene Willems captured a first-place finish (3:43.26).

John Parades was the only Cougar on the men's side to make the podium, finishing second in the 60 hurdles in 8.05.

On the track, the Eagles' Madelyn Knight won the women's 60m hurdles with an 8.73 second performance. Liam Bracken took the men's 400 in 48.05.
