WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Zags & Eags resume indoor campaign at Spokane Indoor Challenge...

While the Cougar Classic, the UW Indoor Preview, and the National Pole Vault Summit were the major highlights of the weekend, there was also other action involving Washington schools.

On Saturday at The Podium, athletes from Gonzaga and Eastern Washington accounted for four wins at the Spokane Indoor Challenge.

Wil Smith and Yacine Guermali (Paul Merca photo) led the charge in the men's 3000 to help the Zags take the first four spots in that event, with Smith running a personal best 8:06.60, and Guermali in second in a season best 8:12.41.

Kristen Garcia dropped down in distance to win the women's mile for Gonzaga, running 5:01.11, while Tommy O'Neil won the men's mile in 4:24.83.

Eastern Washington got their lone win in the women's pole vault, as Savannah Schultz tied with Stanford's Laurel Wong, as both cleared 12-4.5 (3.77m).

In the men's pole vault, the Eagles' Zach Klobutcher was second with a clearance of 16-11.5 (5.17m).

Both Gonzaga and Eastern Washington return to competition next week, as they make the short trip to Moscow, Idaho for the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open at the University of Idaho's Kibbie Dome.

In Canberra, Australia Sunday, Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle finished fourth at the Australian World Cross Country Trials at Stromlo Forrest.

Batt-Doyle navigated the 10k course in a time of 33:47, missing the automatic selection by one place and one second.

Rose Davies won the race in a time of 33:33.

Under Athletics Australia's selection process, the Tokyo Olympian can still be selected to the team for the world cross country championships, which will be held on February 19th on home soil in Bathurst.
