NEW ORLEANS--
After the first few weekends of the 2022-23 collegiate indoor track & field season, the Washington women's team finds itself with its highest ranking in the USTFCCCA Division I National Track & Field Rating Index.

The Huskies start the season ranked number 2 in the country, thanks to eight national top-10 marks, with four of them coming in the mile. Anna Gibson leads the pack in third at 4:35.46, followed by Carley Thomas (No. 5, 4:35.24), Sophie O’Sullivan (No. 6, 4:36.67), and Madison Heisterman (No. 8, 4:38.15). Gibson and O’Sullivan are also ranked in the top-7 in the 800 meters.

Also in the top-10 nationally are new pole vaulters Sara Borton and Nastassja Campbell. They are tied for eighth with their 14-0.5 (4.28m) clearances from the UW Indoor Preview.

Texas is the country's number one women's team, followed by the Huskies, Kentucky, Alabama, and Florida.

Other Pac-12 teams (all listed by the USTFCCCA as Independents as the conference doesn't sponsor indoor track) in the top 25 include number 7 USC, number 14 Oregon, and number 16 Stanford.

On the men's side, Washington opens the season at number 14, thanks to the NCAA leading mark of 7:43.27 set by Kieran Lumb at the Preview. Brian Fay ranks fifth in the 5,000-meters with yet another UW school record of 13:16.77 that he ran back in December. Nathan Green is sixth in the mile with his 3:58.27 PR.

Newcomer Jacob Englar sits 11th in the pole vault after his Husky debut of 17-9.75 (5.43m), with another new transfer, Aidan Ryan, also ranked 8th in the 3,000-meters at 7:53.00. A third new Dawg, Prestin Artis, is 20th in the long jump with his 25-0 (7.62m) leap from the home opener.

The national top five are in order: Stanford, Texas Tech, Florida State, Kentucky, and Ole Miss.

Pac-12 teams in the national top 25 this week include number 11 USC, and number 23 Arizona.

The USTFCCCA national track and field rating index takes into account marks made only during the current season.
