SPOKANE & INDIANAPOLIS--
USA Track & Field and the Spokane Sports Commission announced Saturday at the end of Saturday's nationally televised New Balance Indoor Grand Prix meet that the city will host the 2022 USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships at The Podium, the new downtown multi-sports facility.

The meet will be contested February 25–26, 2022, and will serve as Team USATF’s qualifying meet for the World Athletics Indoor Championships to be contested March 11-13, 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Spokane becomes the second city on the West Coast to host the USATF Indoor Championship meet after Portland in 2016 since Oakland hosted the nationals in 1967 and 1968.

“The door kind of opened for U.S. nationals,” said Eric Sawyer, president and chief executive officer of Spokane Sports, which is handling programming in the building owned by the Spokane Public Facilities District and built on land leased by the city of Spokane’s Parks Department. The money for construction was raised through the sale of bonds authorized by Spokane County.

The Podium, which is being built near the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena and the Spokane Convention Center near the banks of the Spokane River, features a six-lane, 200 meter banked oval track with an 8-lane sprint straightaway, and all of the other amenities of a world class track & field facility. The Podium will seat at least 3500 spectators.

More information will be available in coming months, including ticket prices, broadcast details, and competition schedules.
