BYU's Conner Mantz leads three Cougars under Dempsey facility record...

SEATTLE--
Brigham Young's Conner Mantz (photo by Paul Merca) led two other Cougar teammates inside 13:30 to win the men's 5000 meters at the UW Invitational Friday night.

Mantz, who took command of the race after pacemaker Adam Visokay ceded the front, never was challenged, as he won in a personal best 13:28.00, while teammates Casey Clinger (13:28.79) and Brandon Garnica (13:29.16) all ducked under the Dempsey facility record of 13:29.94, set by Chris Thompson of the Nike Oregon TC in 2012, and the meet record of 13:34.67 set by Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia and the Nike Oregon Project in 2018.

Behind the BYU trio, ten men broke 14 minutes, including Washington State's Colton Johnsen in 4th (13:43.72), the Huskies' Andrew Jordan (13:44.70) and Isaac Green (13:47.41) in fifth and sixth; and teammates Luke Houser (13:47.68) and Joe Waskom (13:52.36) in seventh and eighth.

The top three finishers all were under the previous fastest time in the world this season of 13:37.39 set by Christian Noble of Division II Lee University in Tennessee.

More significantly from an NCAA Division I standpoint, Friday night's race caused a wholesale revision of the top 16 list, which is how many the NCAA accepts into the indoor championship meet.

Going into Friday night's race, the number 16 mark in the NCAA was 14:16.56, of which 16 collegians in the field bettered the mark. While not as dramatic as the men's 5000, the women's 3000 also caused some revisions to the NCAA performance list in that event.

BYU alum Anna Camp outlasted UW volunteer coach Alli Cash in a battle over the last 50 yards, with Camp taking the win in 8:52.75 to Cash's 8:53.52.

BYU's Courtney Wayment was the top collegian in third at 8:54.90, followed by Washington alum Eleanor Fulton (8:55.19), BYU's Olivia Hoj (8:56.91), and the Huskies' Allie Schadler (8:58.13).

In all, six collegians ducked under the #16 mark of 9:20.68.

Husky freshman Jayden White continued his winning ways in the 35-pound weight throw, tossing it 69-10.75 (21.30m). His teammate Beatrice Asomaning won the women's 20-pound weight at 61-10.25 (18.85m).

NCAA qualifier Jonah Wilson of the Dawgs won the men's shot put at 64-2.25 (19.56m), while Makayla Kelby won the women's shot at 51-11 (15.82m).

The meet resumes Saturday at 11 am pacific with the remaining running events.
