WEEKEND RECAP: Sam Adams Classic, CWU Wildcat Invitational & pro marks...

Here's a recap of what happened over the weekend with teams that competed at Whitworth's Sam Adams meet, and the Central Washington University Wildcat Invitational:

SAM ADAMS CLASSIC

Washington State sent a limited number of athletes from Pullman to Spokane for the Sam Adams Classic, hosted by Whitworth University, under sunny skies and warm temperatures.

Emmanuel Wells (photo by Paul Merca) of Washington State reminded folks that he will be a factor in the Pac-12 sprints field next month as he ran a season best 10.34 to win the 100 over teammate Ja'Maun Charles.

The times put the Cougar duo sixth and seventh in the conference.

Eastern Washington's Zach Klobutcher set a personal best in the pole vault, clearing a personal best 16-9.25 (5.11m). That mark puts him second on the school's all-time list.

The Eagles had a strong showing in the women's pole vault, taking the first three places, led by Savannah Schultz, who cleared a personal best 13-7.75 (4.16m) to go to number three on the school's all-time list.

Vernice Keyes of Eastern Washington won the women's hammer with a mark of 186-6 (56.86m) to beat the Washington State duo of Carolina Ulloa-Daza (185-9/56.63m) and Sasha Korolenko (183-7/55.95m).

The Gonzaga men swept the top three spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Ben Hogan took first at 9:16.65, followed by Alex Walde (9:23.22) and Cullen McEachern (9:26.12).

CWU WILDCAT INVITATIONAL

In Ellensburg, Andrew Harris of Central Washington continued his winning ways in the hammer, throwing a school record 196-7 (59.92m) to easily win the competition, and put up the top mark of the day at Saturday's CWU Wildcat Invitational.

"To break the school record is huge, it puts him in a position to where he should really be going to nationals," said CWU Head Coach Kevin Adkisson.

Western Washington's Aliyah Dawkins led the way for the Vikings with three event wins, taking top honors in the 100m hurdles (14.61), high jump (1.67m/5-5.75) and the long jump (5.55m/18-2.5).

Viking senior Hannah Nienaber continued her winning ways in the javelin, throwing 148-10 (45.37m). Nienaber has recorded four first-place finishes in five meets this season.

Western's Cordell Cummings easily won the 400 hurdles in 54.50.

Central Washington's Braydon Maier scored a GNAC leading mark of 6849 points to win the decathlon, while Seattle Pacific's Renick Meyer won with a conference leading 4629 points.

Complete results of the CWU Wildcat Invitational are available here, except for event-by-event marks from the decathlon and heptathlon.

PRO NOTES

Washington volunteer coach Alli Cash, representing Seattle based Oiselle, is on the cusp of qualifying for the US Olympic Trials, as she finished third in the 1500 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California in a time of 4:07.67 Saturday.

One mark we completely missed from April 3rd was the second place finish in the 400 hurdles by Washington State alum CJ Allen, who finished second in the 400 hurdles in a time of 49.70.

Allen has the Olympic Trials qualifying standard in hand, as he ran 49.32 on July 13, 2019 in Chula Vista.
