Zags' James Mwaura sets school record in 5000m at Oregon Relays...

EUGENE--Gonzaga's James Mwaura (photo by Paul Merca) broke the school record in the invitational section of the men's 5000 meters Friday night at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field.

In one of the fastest 5000 meter races run so far this season, Mwaura ran 13:36.18 to finish eighth, as Oregon's Cole Hocker (13:19.98) and Cooper Teare (13:20.24) went 1-2.

Such was the depth of the race that the top eight finishers Friday night are in the NCAA Division I top 20 entering Saturday's competition.

David Ribich of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts finished third in the invitational men's 1500, running 3:44.72, as Colorado's Eduardo Herrera won the race in 3:43.32.

Tom Anderson of Club Northwest was fifth in 3:44.98, and Brannon Kidder of the Brooks Beasts was seventh in 3:47.55.

Other highlights:

Washington State's Neema Kimtai won the open section of the women's 1500 in 4:25.41, as did Stephanie Cho (59.73) in the 400 hurdles.

John Kolb of the Cougars won the discus at 184-3 (56.16m).

The meet resumes Saturday at 10:45 am, then transitions to the USATF Grand Prix at the Oregon Relays at 1:00 pm.

WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEKEND?

In Des Moines, Iowa, several athletes with Washington ties will compete in the pro section of the Drake Relays Saturday.

Washington alum Gianna Woodruff will run the 400 hurdles, while former Pullman resident Katie Nageotte makes her outdoor season debut in the pole vault.

Former Renton resident Devon Allen will run the 110 hurdles, while Washington State alum CJ Allen races in the 400 hurdles.

Friday night, Washington alum Mel Lawrence made her season debut in the steeplechase, finishing sixth in 9:38.39, while fellow alum Baylee Mires was 15th in 10:20.71 in her first attempt at the steeple.

Kirkland native Dillon Maggard finished 11th in a deep men's 5000, running 13:42.92.

In the college ranks, Seattle University is in Fresno for the Fresno State University Invitational, while Eastern Washington University sends a small group of athletes to Phoenix for the Canyon Invitational, hosted by Grand Canyon University.

The remaining members of the Eastern squad makes the drive down from Cheney to compete in the Idaho Invitational in Moscow.

All four Washington NCAA Division II schools will be in Tacoma for the Peyton-Shotwell Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
