WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Eastern Washington sends contingent to Canyon Invite, and more...


Beyond the Drake and Oregon Relays and the USATF Grand Prix, there was a lot of action involving the state's Division I and II teams as the conference championships loom over the horizon in less than a month.

In Phoenix, Eastern Washington sent a small group down to the Canyon Invitational, hosted by Grand Canyon University Saturday.

Steeplechaser Justin Roosma (photo by Emmy Engle/EWU Athletics) got the win, running a personal best 9:13.79.  That mark moved him to seventh on Eastern's all-time top-10 list. 

Parker Bowden started off the men's performances with a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing with a near personal-record time of 13.89, as 2019 world indoor championships silver medalist Jarret Eaton won in 13.75.

Bobby Say finished second in the triple jump with a PR of 48-9 (14.86m). Emmy Engle was third in the javelin with a throw of 147-10 (45.07m), while Jonah Matthews was third in the 100 (10.68), and Zach Klobutcher was third in the men's pole vault at 16-3.5 (4.97m).

Though out of the top three, Katrina Terry was EWU's top finisher in the pole vault with a fourth-place finish and all-time personal record jump of 13-3 1/2. This jump moved her to seventh on Eastern's all-time top-10 list.

Afterwards, Eagle head coach Stan Kerr said, "After such a long absence from this level of competition, it felt great to be back and competing against other top collegians and a handful of professional athletes. It turned out to be a great day for us."

The majority of the Eagle squad competed in Moscow at the Idaho Invitational, hosted by the University of Idaho.

The Eagles got wins on the women's side from Madelyn Knight in the 100 hurdles (14.68), Hally Ruff in the pole vault (11-9.75/3.60m), Vernice Keyes in the hammer (164-11/50.27m), and Kallie Schaplow in the javelin (133-9/40.77m).

Men's winners at Idaho for the Eagles included Trey McAdams in the 400 (49.86), Jamie Christner in the steeple (9:59.91), and the 4 x 400 relay team (3:34.44).

In Fresno, sprinter Isaiah Payne had a strong double at the Fresno State Invitational, while javelin thrower Nicole Whittern had the top women's placing Saturday.

Payne finished third in both the 100 (10.68) and 200 (21.51),and was on the 4x100 relay team that finished second in 41.87 behind San Jose State's 41.44. 

Whittern finished third with a toss of 132-0 (40.23m).

Saint Martin's, Central Washington, Seattle Pacific, and Western Washington competed at Saturday's Peyton-Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma hosted by the University of Puget Sound.Central Washington won both the men's and women's team competition, scoring 184 points to Western Washington's  165, with Saint Martin's third at 99.5 and Seattle Pacific fifth at 53 in the men's meet.

The Wildcats tallied 257 points to dominate the women's meet, with Seattle Pacific second at 111, Saint Martin's fourth at 83, and Western Washington fifth with 74.

Top women's marks on the day belonged to Dania Holmberg of Seattle Pacific in the 5000, who won in 16:57.67, and Natalie Vetto of Western Washington, who won the javelin at 139-11 (42.65m).

Central Washington's Andrew Harris (190-10/58.16m) and Aidan Cain (182-8/55.67m) had the two best men's marks on the day, as they went 1-2 in the hammer throw.

All four Washington GNAC schools will next compete at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational Saturday, hosted by Western Washington in Bellingham.
