WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Top performances at Hayward Premiere, Stanford, Bellingham & USATF Sprint Summit...


The weekend wrap-up begins in Eugene, as the Washington State men's and women's track teams finished up competition at the Hayward Premiere meet at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon Saturday.

The WSU men picked up three huge wins themselves at the Hayward Premiere, beginning with Sam Brixey (photo by Howard Lao) in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.88. Mitch Jacobson posted a season-best in the high jump of 6-feet 11 inches (2.11m) to capture the victory in the event. John Kolb placed first as well in the discus as his throw of 183-feet (59.15m) earned himself the top spot.

Charisma Taylor posted two victories at Hayward Field, first in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.52, and then another win in the triple jump with a mark of 42-feet 5 1/2 inches (12.94m). Stephanie Cho impressed in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 57.16. Aislinn Overby landed in the top spot in the high jump as a personal best of 5-feet 9 3/4 inches (1.77m) secured the victory. Emily Coombs added another win to her outdoor season total in the pole vault, as she placed first on Friday with a mark of 12-feet 9 1/2 inches (3.90m) during the event.

Across town at Lane Community College, Gonzaga's Kristen Garcia won the women's 5000 at the Northwest Distance Jamboree, setting a new school record of 16:10.72, breaking the previous mark of 16:16.88 by Jessica Mildes in 2015.

In Palo Alto, University of Washington volunteer assistant coach Alli Cash won the women's 1500 at the Stanford Invitational Saturday.

Cash ran 4:16.41 to take the win over Stanford's Christina Aragon (4:17.56) and Julia Heymach (4:17.82).

Behind the trio, Anna Gibson of the Huskies made an outstanding return to the squad today, leading with a big PR of 4:17.83 in fourth. Allie Schadler raced for the first time since NCAA cross country, and she ran 4:20.70 in sixth, while Madison Heisterman had an eight-second PR of 4:21.67 in seventh. Freshman Sophie O'Sullivan had another PR in 4:21.91 in eighth. Kelly Makin crossed in 4:26.79 to take ninth.

Heptathlete Lyndsey Lopes took second in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.78 seconds. On the men's side, Julian Body won the 110m hurdles with a second consecutive PR, as he ran 14.18.

Evan Mafilas won the men's 200-meters and was just .01 off his all-time best with a time of 21.01. Kemuel Santana took third in 21.28.

Freshman Jonathan Birchman earned a win in the men's 400m hurdles in 54.26.

In Bellingham, Western Washington athletes earned 17 wins, while Seattle Pacific athletes won four events at the Western Washington University Invitational at Civic Stadium Saturday.


Three of the best marks on the day came from the host Vikings, as senior Karlie Hurley (photo courtesy WWU Athletics) was a double winner on the women's side, recording the top marks in both the long jump and triple jump. Hurley's leap of 12.04m/39-6 in the triple jump is currently in the top 20 in the nation.

Senior Hannah Nienaber improved her personal best and national provisional qualifying mark for the third consecutive week while winning the javelin competition. Nienaber recorded the 10th-best mark in WWU history at 47.08m/154-5, currently the fourth-best throw in NCAA II.

Graduate transfer Calahan Warren continued his assault on the Western Washington school record books, setting a new school record in the 1500 meters, running 3:44.82, breaking a 21-year old record set by Devin Kemper in 2000. That mark is currently the second fastest this season in Division II.

In Prairie View, Texas, several Washington post-collegians ventured out to Prairie View A&M for the USATF Sprint Summit.

Tacoma's Marcus Chambers finished second in the men's 400, running 46.12, as Kenya's Emmanuel Korir won in 46.06.

Washington alum and Panamanian national record holder Gianna Woodruff finished third in the 400 hurdles, running 57.22, as Ashley Spencer took the win in 56.36.

Washington State alum CJ Allen finished third in the 400 hurdles, as he ran 50.07, behind Kenny Selmon's world leading time of 48.87. 

Bonney Lake HS grad and 2016 Cape Verde Olympian Jordin Andrade was fifth in the same race, running 51.57.
