Washington squads roar back into USTFCCCA top 25 after strong showing in SoCal...

NEW ORLEANS--Both of the University of Washington track and field squads made a return to the top 25 in the USTFCCCA national rating index, released Monday afternoon.

The Washington men charged 23 spots all the way to number 11 after starting week 1 at number 9 then dropping out of the top 25 the last two weeks.

The Huskies were powered by an NCAA leading mark by Brian Fay in the 5000, who ran 13:16.52 at the Bryan Clay Invitational last week. 

They also got top 20 marks in that same race from Kieran Lumb's 13:23.26 (#4) and Isaac Green's 13:29.55 (#12), plus Luke Houser's (Paul Merca photo) school record in the 1500 of 3:37.51 (#6) at Mt. SAC.

Jayden White's throw of 227-3 (69.27m) in the hammer at the Beach Invitational, Ollie Thorner's decathlon score of 7602 at Mt. SAC, and javelin thrower Roan Allen's toss of 246-3 (75.04m) two weeks ago in San Diego, helped boost the Huskies' in the rating index, which only factors marks made this season.

The nation's top five teams after week four are in order: Texas, Florida, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Alabama.

Pac-12 teams in the USTFCCCA top 25 include number 13 Oregon, number 14 USC, number 18 Arizona State, number 19 Stanford and number 23 Cal.

On the women's side, the Huskies got a boost in the ratings index all the way to number 21 after also being out of the top 25 from heptathletes Ida Eikeng and Hannah Rusnak The duo scored 5916 and 5578 points last week at Mt. SAC. Those scores are currently the #2 and #17 marks in the NCAA.

They also got a national top-20 mark from Makayla Kelby in the discus, as she threw 185-1 (56.42m) at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.

The nation's top five women's teams are in order: Texas, Florida, Texas A&M, LSU, and Arkansas.

Pac-12 teams in the USTFCCCA top-25 include number 10 Oregon, number 13 Arizona State, number 14 Colorado, number 16 USC, and number 18 Cal.

Both Husky squads prep for Friday's dual meet against Washington State in Pullman.

ROUGH GO FOR BELLINGHAM NATIVE & US OLYMPIAN JAKE RILEY AT BOSTON MARATHON


In Boston, Sehome HS grad and Tokyo Olympian Jake Riley (Howard Lao photo) had a rough outing at the Boston Marathon Monday, as he finished 148th in a time of 2:30:48.

Riley began having problems shortly before the 15 kilometer mark of the race, and fell out of contention.

2011 world championship team member and Washington alum Mike Sayenko finished 21st, running 2:13:46, and was the eighth American across the line in the Abbott World Marathon Majors race that began in Hopkinton, and finished in Boston.

Another Washington alum, Kaylee Flanagan, finished 26th overall in the women's race, running 2:39:26.
