Brandon Miller of the Brooks Beasts advances to Sunday's 800m finals...
NANJING, China--Brandon Miller (photo by Dan Vernon/World Athletics) of the Seattle based Brooks Beasts won his semifinal race in the men's 800 meters Saturday morning to advance to Sunday's finals at the World Athletics Indoor Championships at the Cube Gymnasium, as he heads towards a showdown with fellow American Josh Hoey.
After seeing Hoey, who is one of the revelations of the 2025 indoor season for his front running tactics, win the first heat in 1:45.23, the fastest time of the three heats, Miller took the race out hard, then cruised to the victory in 1:46.84, grabbing one of the two spots to Sunday's finals.
In the second heat, Miller's Brooks Beasts teammate John Rivera of Puerto Rico was in good position to at least move on to Sunday's final, as he was solidly entrenched in second entering the final turn of the four lap race.
However, Rivera could not hold onto his position and faded to fourth, running 1:49.49, as Eliott Cretan (1:48.65) of Belgium and Elvin Canales of Spain (1:48.70) finished first and second.
Valery Tobias finished fifth in her semifinal of the women's 800, running 2:03.39, as the top three were all under 2:01.40 to advance to Sunday's final.
Sunday's action in Nanjing involving athletes with Washington ties begins at 7:33 pm Saturday night Pacific time, as Washington State's Micaela De Mello of Brazil runs in the first round of the women's 60 hurdles.
The semifinals and finals will be held at 4:35 am Pacific (7:35 pm local time), and 6:01 am Pacific time (9:01 pm local time).
