Luke Houser wins his heat of the men's 1500 at world indoors...


NANJING, China--
Washington alum Luke Houser (second from left/Paul Merca file photo) won his heat of the men's 1500 Friday night to highlight day one of the World Athletics Indoor Championships at the Cube Gymnasium in the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park.

Houser, a native of Woodinville, who now trains as a post-collegian with the Atlanta Track Club, ran 3:41.16 to get one of the two automatic spots into Sunday's final.

In the same heat, fellow Husky alum Kieran Lumb finished fourth in 3:42.32, and will not advance to the finals.

In the first heat, Seattle resident Sam Prakel, who is Lumb's training partner under UW men's head coach Andy Powell, finished second in 3:36.93.

Other action from Friday's competition:

--Washington State alum Ray Ray Wells finished fourth in his heat of the men's 60 meter dash Friday morning, and did not advance to the semifinals later. Wells ran 6.76 in his heat; 

--In the semifinals of the women's 1500, current Husky Sophie O'Sullivan of Ireland finished sixth in the third heat, running a short track personal best of 4:16.68, just over three seconds and three places short of advancing to Sunday's finals;

--The first round of qualifying in the men's 800 saw Brooks Beasts teammates Brandon Miller run 1:46.47 to get second in the heat, just ahead of John Rivera, representing Puerto Rico, who ran 1:46.84 for third. Both advanced to Saturday's semifinals;

--Valery Tobias of the Brooks Beasts advanced to Saturday's semis in the women's 800, as she ran 2:04.02 to take third in her heat;

--Current Husky Kaia Tupu-South finished 16th in the final of the women's shot put, as she threw 53-11.75 (16.45m).

Saturday's schedule is fairly light, as only Miller, Rivera, and Tobias of the Brooks Beasts are running in the semifinals of the men's and women's 800.
