World Indoors in Nanjing get underway late Thursday night on West Coast...
For those on the West Coast, the World Athletics Indoor Championships from Nanjing, China gets underway late Thursday night with a number of Washington athletes toeing the line.
At 8:15 pm Thursday (11:15 am Friday morning in Nanjing), Valery Tobias (Paul Merca photo) of the Brooks Beasts runs in the first round of the women's 800 meters, with an opportunity to advance to Saturday morning's (9:05 pm Friday night Pacific) semifinals.
Forty minutes later, her Beasts teammates Brandon Miller of the USA and John Rivera, competing for Puerto Rico, go in the first round of the men's 800, with a chance to advance to the semifinals Saturday morning.
Washington State alum Ray Ray Wells runs in the first round of the men's 60 at 9:55 pm Thursday night (12:55 pm Friday afternoon in Nanjing). Should he advance, the semifinals will be run at 5:03 am Friday morning (8:03 pm Friday in Nanjing), with the finals almost 90 minutes later to end Friday's session.
Current Husky Sophie O'Sullivan of Ireland makes her world indoor championships debut in the heats of the women's 1500 at 3:33 am Friday (6:33 pm Friday in Nanjing), while Washington alums Kieran Lumb of Canada and Luke Houser of Team USA, along with Seattle resident Sam Prakel run in the heats of the men's 1500 at 4:18 am Friday (7:18 pm in Nanjing).
One addition to the list of Washington athletes competing at the world indoors is Washington State's Micaela De Mello, who will represent Brazil in the 60 meter hurdles.
De Mello was inside the top list in the event, as she ran 8.00 twice this indoor season, at the MPSF championships in Spokane, and last week in the semifinals of the NCAA indoor championships in Virginia Beach.
She'll potentially run three races on Sunday, first at 10:25 am local time (7:25 pm Saturday Pacific time), and twice Sunday evening at 7:35 pm local time (4:35 am Pacific time), with the finals less than 90 minutes later.
Peacock ($) will live stream all three days of the world indoor championships.
OUTDOOR SEASON OPENER FOR SEVERAL TEAMS...
For eight of the nine Washington Division I and II schools, the 2025 outdoor track and field season gets into high swing this weekend.
On Thursday, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga and Washington State will have partial squads competing in the two-day Buc Scoring Meet hosted by Whitworth University in Spokane.
The majority of Washington State's squad heads to San Diego for Friday and Saturday's Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
Eastern Washington, Central Washington, Western Washington, Saint Martin's, Seattle Pacific, and SeattleU all head to Eugene for Friday and Saturday's Oregon Preview meet at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
Washington, which had finals this week, is opting to open the outdoor season next week at the Texas Relays.
