Brooks Beasts newcomer John Rivera puts himself in position for world indoor champs berth in Boston...

BOSTON--
Ole Miss grad John Rivera (Paul Merca photo), the newest member of Seattle's Brooks Beasts, may have put himself in a position to qualify for the world indoor track & field championships in less than three weeks in Nanjing, China.

At the Last Chance Indoor Qualifier at the hyper-fast Boston University Track & Tennis Center, Rivera finished second behind Cal Poly's Aidan McCarthy in the invitational men's 800.

McCarthy ran 1:45.19, with Rivera, a Puerto Rican citizen, close by in 1:45.32, which is a new short-track personal best, slightly behind the world indoor championship standard of 1:45.00, and not far off from his all-time personal best of 1:44.76, set last year.

The deadline to get a qualifying mark for world indoors is March 9th, with the final Road to Nanjing list published on the 12th.

Washington alum Luke Houser, who was third at the USA indoor championships in the 1500 last week, will most likely get one of the two spots for the world indoor championships after running a personal best 3:51.14, just off the world championships standard of 3:50.50.

Sam Prakel, who was second at the USA indoor championships ahead of Houser, finished sixth in 3:52.77. He'll have to wait until after March 9th to see if he gets to go to Nanjing.

Henry Wynne of the Brooks Beasts was tenth in the top section of the mile in 4:00.86. Wynne, who was sixth in the USATF 1500 race, was, like Prakel and Houser, looking to improve his standing in the Road to Nanjing.

Houser's training partner and former Husky Aidan Ryan won the second section of the mile in a personal best 3:54.18.

As of now, Washington alum Joe Waskom is the only American who competed at the USATF indoor championships who is in the Road to Nanjing top list. USA indoor champ Hobbs Kessler, who has the qualifying standard, is declining to go to Nanjing. Benjamin Allen, who finished fifth at nationals, ran in Boston, placing seventh in 3:53.29

--In the women's 5000, Woodinville native Olivia Markezich was fifth in a personal best 15:14.32, while Kayley DeLay of the Brooks Beasts was seventh in 15:37.67.

LAKE STEVENS NATIVE TAYLOR ROE WINS US HALF MARATHON TITLE...

In Atlanta, Lake Stevens native Taylor Roe won the USATF Half Marathon Championship, hosted by the Atlanta Track Club on the streets of the city Sunday.

Roe held off hometown favorite Emma Grace Hurley and a hard-charging Amanda Vestri for the victory in the women’s race.

After Weini Kelati made a bold move around the eight-kilometer mark to distance herself from the field, she was reeled in by Roe and Hurley exiting Piedmont Park around the eight mile mark.

Over the next three miles, Roe and Hurley swapped the lead three times, before Roe took the lead for good with a mile and a half to go.

Roe broke away to break the tape in 1:07:22, a personal best and course record in just her second race in the half marathon distance. Hurley, who was also running just her second half marathon, finished in second, thirteen seconds back.

Roe’s winning time on the winding and hilly Atlanta course is a pending national record for a women’s only race. It also makes her the fifth-fastest woman in American history.

Roe will compete in the half marathon at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in late September in San Diego.
