Cougs garner six men's and six women's wins at outdoor season opener in San Diego...
In San Diego, Washington State athletes accounted for six wins on the men's side, and six on the women's side as the Cougars opened up the 2025 outdoor season at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University on Friday and Saturday.
Only a week after competing in the 5000 meters at the NCAA indoor track & field championships in Virginia Beach, Evans Kurui (Paul Merca photo) dropped down in distance to the 1500 meters, winning in 3:46.17 Friday night.
Zenah Cheptoo of the Cougars won the women's 5000 meters Friday night in a time of 16:11.14, while Caroline Jepkorir won the 3000 steeplechase in 10:16.68
Saturday, Washington State got their day started by winning the men's 4 x 100 relay in 40.26.
Parker Duskin won the men's 110 hurdles in a time of 13.85.
WSU alum Jasneet Nijjar, who was on Canada's Olympic 4 x 400 meter relay pool last year, and is now competing as a post-collegian, won the women's 400 in 53.58.
Royal Haley won the men's 400 in 47.20, while Esyias Banks won the 400 hurdles in 52.53.
Brooke Lyons of the Cougs was a double winner on the day, taking the women's 100 in 11.44, and the 200 in a wind-aided 23.32.
On the field, the WSU women went 1-2 in the javelin, with Luceris Suarez Pacheco winning at 153-9 (46.88m), and Laura Lindquist second at 150-7 (45.91m). NCAA indoor qualifier Tatum Moku won the pole vault at 14-0 (4.27m).
Kai Twaddle-Dunham won the men's discus with a throw of 184-11 (56.37m).
JOHAN CORREA STORMS TO TOP OF NCAA D2 LEAD IN 800M AT OREGON PREVIEW...
In Eugene, Central Washington's Johan Correa went to the top of the NCAA Division II leaderboard at Saturday's Oregon Preview at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Correa, who was fourth at the NCAA Division II indoor championships in Indianapolis last week, ran a personal best 1:48.61 to take the win.
Western Washington's Maurice Woodring was impressive in winning the men's 400 hurdles in a personal best 52.45.
Other top marks on what was a wet Saturday in Eugene:
--Maddy Shekhewat of Eastern Washington dominated the field in the men's 110 hurdles, winning in 14.08;
--In less than ideal jumping conditions, Egypt Simmons of Eastern Washington won the long jump with a mark of 19-8.25 (6.00m).
--In Friday night's distance carnival, Western Washington's Kevin McDermott ran essentially a solo race in winning the men's 1500 in 3:48.39 in what appeared to be sloppy conditions.
