Egypt Simmons of Eastern bounces to number 11 on NCAA Division I list in TJ, plus weekend recap...

With teams and small groups of individuals competing in various venues up and down the West Coast, it was a bit of a challenge to track what everyone was doing.

Thanks to our friends at the various sports information offices around the state, here's a recap of the other meets this past weekend:

WHITWORTH PEACE MEET

From a national perspective, the big mark from Friday's Whitworth Peace Meet hosted by Whitworth University in Spokane was set by Eastern Washington's Egypt Simmons (photo courtesy EWU Athletics) in the women's triple jump.

After opening with a foul and two straight jumps in the first three rounds of 13 meters or better, Simmons extended her own EWU school record in the sixth and final round to 43-4.25 (13.21m), currently the number 11 mark in Division I.

"We couldn't have asked for better conditions to improve and push ourselves. The Jump Queen set the tone for the day with an incredible performance, smashing her own school record by a full foot! That's how you start off the day!", said Eastern Washington program director Erin Tucker.

Simmons also won the long jump with a best of 20-3.75 (6.19m), and got two other wins on the day from Maddy Shekhawat in the 110 hurdles in 13.88, and from the men's 4x100 meter relay, which ran 40.72.

Central Washington got five wins, led by Johan Correa's 1500 meter title in 3:49.97, and Carley Huber's win in the 400 hurdles in 62.70.

Gonzaga's win came in the women's 1500, as Anna Lanigat was victorious in 4:33.29, and Washington State's Nevaeh Wilson won the women's discus at 148-10 (45.38m).

Seattle Pacific's Hannah Chang ran a season-best 14.40 for second place in the 100-meter hurdles, and posted a career-best 1:07.18 in the 400 hurdles.

THE BEST DIVISION II MARKS FROM STANFORD...

While most of our focus at the Stanford Invitational were on Washington and Washington State, both Western Washington and Seattle Pacific sent their top distance runners to Stanford.

Western's Kevin McDermott (Paul Merca photo) smashed his own school record in the 5000m placing 18th in section 2 with a time of 13:51.18. McDermott broke the school record at the same meet last season running 13:57.89. He's now number 2 in GNAC history. His time of 13:51.18 is currently sixth in NCAA II.

Seattle Pacific's Annika Esvelt broke 16 minutes in the women's 5000, running 15:56.94 to take the NCAA Division II lead.

Western's Ila Davis moved to number 3 on the NCAA descending order list, running 10:20.91, while Seattle Pacific's Maya Ewing ran a school record 10:35.63, the seventh fastest time in D2.

OTHER MEETS...

In La Jolla, California, Western's Maurice Woodring won the 400m hurdles at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego, topping the 25-competitor field with a school-record time of 51.69. The Vikings' Kennedy Cook won the 400m in a school-record time of 54.09. Cook moved past teammate Bec Bennett, who ran 54.26 to place third, just off her previous school record of 54.25. Cook is currently third in NCAA D2 and Bennett is sixth.
