WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Toney & Campbell win pole vaults at Mt. SAC, plus more...
Here's the roundup of what happened Saturday in the world of Washington state collegiate and pro track and field:
In Walnut, California at the Mt. SAC Relays, it was a Washington sweep of the men's and women's invitational pole vaults at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Husky grad student Scott Toney (UW Athletics photo) won the men's pole vault over Max Manson, who was a UW grad student last year.
Both cleared 17-8.5 (5.40m), with Toney getting the win on fewer total misses.
Current Husky Mathis Bresko tied for fourth with a best of 17-4.5 (5.30m).
An expected battle between Washington's Amanda and Hana Moll never materialized, as Amanda did not start.
Washington alum Nastassja Campbell picked up her second straight win after clearing her personal best of 15-0 (4.57m) at the Texas Relays three weeks ago, emerging victorious with a modest clearance of 14-1.25 (4.30m).
The top four all cleared the same height, with Campbell winning on fewer misses, as her winning height was on her opening bar of the competition.
Hana Moll ended up fourth, thanks to a third attempt make at 14-1.25 (4.30m). She passed at 14-5.25 (4.40m), opting to go for the win at 14-9 (4.50m) after Campbell and two others ahead of Moll missed all three tries at the lower bar.
EAGLES GET TWO WINS AT BEACH INVITATIONAL...
In Long Beach, Eastern Washington got wins from their men's 4 x 100 relay team, and a 1-2 finish by Egypt Simmons and Kimberly Smith in the women's long jump on the final day of the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State at Jack Rose Track.
In the 4 x 100 relay, the Eagles, who were led off by former Husky Daniel Gaik, and hurdles standout Maddy Shekhawat on the third leg, ran a season best 40.69 to beat South Dakota State's 40.85 in the second section.
Eastern topped the 40.75 run by Elite Sports and Fitness Academy run in the first section.
Shekhawat added a third place finish in the 110 hurdles, where he ran 14.01.
The women's long jump saw both Egypt Simmons and Kimberly Smith finish 1-2 with identical marks of 20-0.5 (6.11m), with Simmons credited for the win with a better second mark of 19-8.25 (6.00m) to Smith's 18-2.25 (5.54m).
For Smith, that turned out to be her only two legal jumps of the day, as she fouled her other four attempts.
Washington State's Maxwell Moore finished fourth in the men's discus with a best of 178-6 (54.41m).
WINDS PLAY HAVOC AT WILDCAT INVITATIONAL...
In Ellensburg, the tricky winds played havoc to all the competitors at the Central Washington University Wildcat Invitational Saturday.
One of the few events that wasn't affected was the men's 110 hurdles, as Central's David Brown, who rode a +2.0 legal wind to win in 14.15, the fastest time in the GNAC conference this season. In fact, the top three finishers all ran the three fastest times this season.
The Wildcats' All-American E'lexis Hollis was the beneficiary of a +5.4 wind to win the 100 in 11.28, 1/100ths off her season best. She also won the 200, which on paper was supposed to be the premier event of the meet, running 24.24, which had a legal wind reading of +1.4, but had a bit of a cross wind entering the home straight.
One of the best marks of the day came in the women's shot put as Jessica Polkinghorn of Western Washington, the conference indoor champ, won with a throw of 58-8.25 (15.45m), the fifth best mark in Division II this season, to beat defending GNAC outdoor champ Destany Herbert of Northwest Nazarene's 48-2 (14.68m).
