Gianna Woodruff finishes fifth in 400H at Pietro Mennea Golden Gala meet...

ROME--
Washington alum Gianna Woodruff (Paul Merca file photo) finished fifth in Thursday's women's 400 hurdles at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala meet at the historic Stadio Olimpico, the fourth stop of the Wanda Diamond League series.

Woodruff, who was fourth on Sunday at the Rabat Diamond League race, ran her second straight season best, clocking 53.58.

Slovakia's Emma Zapletalová, who won in Rabat, notched her second straight Diamond League meet, running 52.58, to lower both her personal best and national record of 52.82 that she set on Sunday.  Her time is also a 2026 world leading mark.

Woodruff was the only athlete with Washington ties competing in Rome.

The Wanda Diamond League series continues on Sunday in Stockholm at the Bauhaus Galan meet, where Woodinville native Olivia Markezich, and College Place native Kenneth Rooks are on the start list in the women's and men's 3000 steeplechase.
