In Medelin, Colombia, the first Pan American Athletics Championships were contested Friday through Sunday, with the winner receiving a wild card spot in next year's Pan Am Games.
USATF did not send a full team, but sent a small group of individuals. The only one with Washington ties competing for Team USATF was race walker Katie Burnett (Paul Merca file photo), who finished seventh in the women's half marathon race walk.
Burnett covered the distance Sunday in 1:55:10, as Evelyn Inga of Peru won in 1:35:34.
Former Washington State javelin thrower Valentina Barrios Bornacelli of the host country won the event with a throw of 199-2 (60.72m).
Another former Cougar, Micaela De Mello of Brazil finished third in the 100 hurdles, running 12.90, after running an identical time to win her semifinal Saturday.
Her Brazilian teammate Vitoria Alves, took the win in 12.59.
Former Coug John Paredes of the host nation was third in the 110 hurdles, running 13.44. Marcos Herrera of Ecuador won in 13.40.
Paredes also ran the second leg of Colombia's 4 x 100 relay team, which finished third in 38.85, as the Dominican Republic won in 38.34.
Washington alum Justin O'Toole of Canada struggled in the top section of a two-section final in the men's 800, finishing sixth in 1:49.72. Eduardo Ribeiro of Brazil was the overall winner in 1:45.07.
In Poznań, Poland, UW grad student Jimmy Rhoads (Paul Merca photo) finished seventh in the men's pole vault at the Czesław Cybulski Memorial Sunday.
Rhoads cleared a best of 17-8.5 (5.40m), as Ernest Obiena of the Philippines cleared 18-9.25 (5.72m) to take the win.
