Canadian nationals start Wednesday, while USA U20 champs begin Thursday...
Beginning Wednesday, Canada has both its senior and U20 championships in Ottawa, and USA Track & Field will hold its under-20 championships starting Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene.
For both Canada and the USA, the national championship meet for the U20 athletes is the selection meet for the World Athletics U20 Championships back in Eugene August 5-9.
Among those competing in the Canadian U20 championships are Washington's Chloe Symon (Paul Merca photo), and incoming freshman Mary MacLean from Edmonton in the 800.
Symon goes into the national championships as the Canadian U20 record holder at the 800 meter distance, having broken it twice this season, most recently at the NCAA West Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
In the Canadian senior championships, 2025 world championship team members Kieran Lumb and Jasneet Nijjar are entered.
Lumb, the Washington alum is entered in both Thursday's men's 5000 meters, and the 1500 prelims on Saturday.
Nijjar, a Washington State alum who was on their country's 4 x 400 relay team in Tokyo, is entered in the 400 and 200. She goes in the 400 prelims on Thursday, while the prelims in the 200 are on Sunday.
Washington alum Aaron Ahl is entered in both the 3000 steeplechase on Thursday, and the 1500 on Saturday.
The Huskies' Chloe Thomas, fresh off competing at the NCAA championships last week, is only entered in the 5000 on Thursday.
Jenica Swartz is entered in Friday's 800 meter prelims. After the Canadian championships, she will head to Germany for the 2026 NextGen European Tour, a two-week international camp and competition block designed to put Canada’s rising athletes right where they need to be: in the middle of the European season, under pressure, and surrounded by world-class competition.
For the Canadian seniors, the Canadian championships are the selection meet for the Commonwealth Games, with the track and field competition scheduled for July 27-August 1st in Glasgow, Scotland.
