Washington alum Kieran Lumb wins Canadian 5000m title, plus USA U20 recap...


The last few days has seen a whirlwind of activity, from the start of the Canadian championships in Ottawa, the USA Under-20 championships in Eugene, as well as the Diamond League meet in Doha, so here we go:

CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS...

In Ottawa, Washington alum Kieran Lumb (Paul Merca file photo) won the Athletics Canada 5000 meter title, using his 1500 meter speed to take the title on Thursday.

Lumb closed with a 53-second final 400 after the field dawdled through the first 3000 in 9:08.94 to win in 14:24.29. 

Lumb, who traveled to Ottawa from his training base in Norway, will drop down to the 1500, with prelims starting Saturday night, and the finals on Sunday.

Washington alum Aaron Ahl finished third in the 3000 steeplechase Thursday, despite falling twice in the water pit, running 8:55.94. Jean-Simon Desgagnés secured his fourth consecutive 3,000m steeplechase title, running 8:50.71.

Ahl will also contest the 1500 Saturday and Sunday.

Washington State alum Jasneet Nijjar finished third in the finals of the women's 400 Friday night, running 53.34. Lauren Gale of the Ottawa Lions won in 51.94.

Nijjar will drop down in distance and run in the prelims of the 200 Saturday, with the finals on Sunday.

Fresh off of competing at both the 5000 and 10000 at last week's NCAA championships in Eugene, Washington's Chloe Thomas finished fourth in the women's 5000, running 15:42.50. Gabriela Debues-Stafford won the title in 15:23.26.

Washington's Jenica Swartz finished second in her heat of the women's 800 Friday and earned an automatic qualifying spot to Saturday night's finals, running 2:07.05.

Saturday night, UW freshman Chloe Symon and incoming freshman Mary MacLean run in the prelims of the women's under 20 800 meters as they vie for a spot on Canada's U20 world championship team.

Symon goes into the meet as the national record holder at the distance, after breaking it twice during the collegiate season.

USA U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP...

Friday marked the end of the two-day USA Track & Field Under-20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, hosted by the University of Oregon.

The USA U20 championships is the qualifying meet for the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, which returns to Eugene August 5-9 after having hosted it in 2014.

Miller Warme of Kamiak, who won the Washington 4A title in the 110 hurdles, finished second in the 400 hurdles Friday, running 49.28, as Keenen Davis of Archbishop Carroll HS in Washington DC won in 49.20.

Both have the world championships standard and will return to Eugene in August.

Simon Roselli of Spokane's Mead HS won the men's discus, throwing 205-7 (62.67m) to clinch his return to Eugene.

Washington's Owen Powell finished third in the men's 3000, running 8:42.53, as Noah Bontrager of Indiana's Westview HS in Topeka won in 8:32.53.  Powell ran in the finals of the 1500 a few hours earlier, where he finished tenth in 3:56.55.

Kimberly Beard of King's HS was third in the women's hammer, where she threw 201-6 (61.44m). Burklie Burton of Oklahoma State won with a throw of 212-6 (64.78m).


WOODRUFF FOURTH IN DOHA DIAMOND LEAGUE 400H...

In Doha, Washington alum Gianna Woodruff finished fourth in the 400 hurdles at the seventh stop of the Wanda Diamond League tour.

Woodruff ran 53.88, as Slovakia's Emma Zapletalová continued her dominance of the Diamond League series, winning yet again in another 2026 world lead and national record time of 52.30.

The Wanda Diamond League tour resumes on June 28th in Paris.
