Busy Friday for all nine Washington D1/D2 schools in California...
All nine of Washington’s Division I and II schools had athletes competing at two meets in the Greater Los Angeles area Friday—the BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL in Azusa, and the BEACH INVITATIONAL in Long Beach.
Additionally, a few of the University of Washington's and Gonzaga University's distance runners were running up the coast at the CARDINAL CLASSIC at Stanford.
Here’s what happened:
COUGS GET WINS FROM MOLLY SCHARMANN AND 4x100 RELAY
At Cougar Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific University, Washington State’s Molly Scharmann (left/photo by Paul Merca) won the women’s pole vault with a clearance of 13-3.5 (4.05m) as the Bryan Clay Invitational concluded Friday.
The men’s 4 x 100 relay team also got the win, as the team of Emmanuel Wells, Ja’Maun Charles, Ethan Gardner, and Jake Ulrich combined to run 40.51.
Other highlights:
—The Cougs got second place finishes from Nick Johnson in the 110 hurdles, as he ran 13.99, while Cordell Cummings of Western Washington was second overall in the 400 hurdles, running 51.95 to win his heat.
Former UW volunteer coach Christie Moerman finished second in the women’s 100 hurdles, running 13.17.
On the field, Peyton Fredrickson took second in the men’s high jump at 7-1 (2.16m), while teammate Mitch Jacobson was third at 6-11 (2.11m).
The Cougars’ Jacob Englar was third in the men’s pole vault at 16-8.75 (5.10m), while Western Washington’s Raquel Pellecer was third in the women’s javelin at 153-9 (46.88m).

BROCK EAGER AND ONYIE CHIBUOGWU STAND OUT AT BEACH INVITATIONAL HAMMER
In Long Beach, Washington State’s Brock Eager threw a personal best 235-11 (71.90m) to finish as the top collegian in the field on the first day of the Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Track on the campus of Long Beach State University.
Sean Donnely of the Iron Wood TC won with a mark of 253-3 (77.20m), the third best mark in the world so far this season.
After the men’s competition, Washington’s Onyie Chibuogwo extended her school record in the hammer with her fifth place finish, as she threw 208-3 (63.48m).
Alyssa Wilson of UCLA won a spirited battle, throwing 224-11 (68.56m) to beat Cal’s Camryn Rogers (224-8/68.46m) by three inches.
In the mens’ 5000, Western Washington’s Dylan Hayes was third in the 5000m in 15:10.58.

BATT-DOYLE WINS WOMENS 5000 AT CARDINAL CLASSIC
Up the California coast at Stanford, Washington’s Izzi Batt-Doyle returned to the scene of her school record at 10000 meters, as she won the women’s 5000 meters on the first day of the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Stanford University at Cobb Track and Angell Field Friday.
Batt-Doyle set an outdoor personal best of 15:43.33 to get the win over Savannah Carnahan of Furman.
The mark puts the Husky senior from Adelaide, Australia number five on the UW all-time list at that distance.
In the men's 800-meters, sophomore Devan Kirk ran a season-best time of 1:49.90 to take second and right behind him was senior Connor Morello in 1:50.00.
The women’s 800 saw Hannah Derby (2:07.58) and Nicole Goecke (2:07.62) of the Huskies both set season bests.
To round out the evening, Gonzaga’s Yacine Guemali ran 14:02.64 in one section of the men’s 5000m to finish fifth, while in the top section, Mt. Spokane HS alum John Dressel of Colorado was eighth in 13:42.57, while the Huskies’ Fred Huxham was 11th in 13:49.47, as NCAA champ Grant Fisher of Stanford won in 13:29.52.
