Eagles' Larry Still breaks school pole vault record; EWU redshirt Grant Shurtliff wins Pelluer decathlon...

CHENEY—Eastern Washington’s Larry Still (above/photo courtesy EWU Athletics) broke his own school record in the pole vault to highlight day 2 of the Pelluer Invitational at Roos Field on the Eastern Washington campus Friday.

With the inclement weather, meet organizers moved the pole vault indoors as Still, who holds the all time best mark in that event at Eastern Washington at 17-1.75 (5.23m), extended the school record with his winning jump of 17-6.5 (5.35m).

This is the third time Still has broken the school record; the first was at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in 2016 and the second was just two weeks ago at the Sam Adams Classic.

According to EWU head coach Stan Kerr, "Coach (Eric) Allison has done a fabulous job getting Larry to these national level jumps on a consistent basis. There's a special side to this new record when you consider the winding path Larry has taken to get to this point. There are many great jumps still to come."

Perhaps one of the most significant marks made Friday was from an Eastern Washington athlete who is being redshirted this season.

Multi-event specialist Grant Shurtliff, a transfer student who won the NWAAC decathlon title two years ago at Lane CC in Eugene, won that competition at the Pelluer with a ten-event score of 6920 points.

Shurtliff, who led at the break with 3547 points, won the discus (119-10/36.54m) and the pole vault (16-2.75/4.95m), finished third in the 110 highs (15.96) and second in the javelin (165-8/50.49m) to come within four points of the Eastern Washington school record of 6924 set in 2000 by Eric Boyd.

If he had competed for the Eagles instead of as an unattached athlete, his mark would lead the Big Sky Conference and rank number 22 on this year’s NCAA performance list entering this weekend.

In the heptathlon, Eastern’s Margaret Nelson took the win with 4498 points, as first day leader Aulane Mpouli finished third with 4289 points. The Eagles’ Dominique Butler finished second with 4462 points.

Eastern’s Keshun McGee won the men’s long jump with a wind-aided (+2.5 mps) mark of 23-11.5 (7.30m).

The main portion of the Pelluer Invitational will be contested Saturday.
