WHAT'S ON TAP: Huskies off to Boston & Terre Haute; Falcons open season at PLU Invite...

Here’s what’s on tap for this weekend:

The number 3 ranked University of Washington men’s cross country team (above/photo by Paul Merca) heads off to Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts just outside of Boston, for Friday’s Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College, with the 8 kilometer race scheduled to start at 3:30 local time (12:30 pm in Seattle).

At last year’s meet, the Huskies finished second behind Syracuse, and built upon that performance to finish sixth at the NCAA championships in Madison, Wisconsin.

Expected to race in Boston on Friday are Talon Hull, Julius Diehr, Mick Stanovsek, Nick Laccinole, Isaac Mohn, and new transfers Jack Rowe and Andrew Jordan.

"We are coming off a good preseason camp, including a week in Leavenworth training hard," head coach Andy Powell says, "and the main objective was to get some good base in, bond and set our goals and come together as a team. We haven't had any hard training yet, Monday after Boston is when we usually start ramping things up. So it should be a good starting point to see where we're at."

Meanwhile, the number 3 Husky women’s squad will make the first of hopefully three trips to Terre Haute, Indiana for Saturday’s John McNichols Invitational, hosted by Indiana State University, where they’ll race a 5k distance instead of the normal 6k, with the race starting at 9:45 am (6:45 am in Seattle)

The Huskies, who were ninth at the NCAA championships last year, are coming off a nearly three week training period in and around the Colorado Springs area.

“Coming off twenty days at altitude is uncharted territory for us," says UW director of track & cross country Maurica Powell. "With the exception of Katie Rainsberger (a native of Colorado) it's the first time training at altitude for a long period for us. They are fit, healthy, and excited but tired. We will fly in on Friday afternoon and get up and race, so we're looking at the race as part of preseason training camp."

Eleven Huskies will see action on Saturday, led by All-Americans Katie Rainsberger and Lilli Burdon along with 2018 NCAA Championship returners Allie Schadler, Shona McCulloch, and Kelly Makin. Senior Kaitlyn Neal, juniors Hannah Waskom and Kiera Marshall, sophomores Camila David-Smith and Madison Heisterman, and freshman Melany Smart will round out the squad.

Media partner Flotrack ($) will stream the meet.

The men’s 8k gets underway at 11 am at the PLU Meadows on the school’s campus, while the women’s 6k race starts at 11:45 am.

The Falcon women’s squad go into the meet ranked number 8 in the latest USTFCCCA national poll, the second highest of any GNAC conference squad behind only number 7 Alaska Anchorage.

Seattle Pacific’s release is available here.

Friday, Central Washington returns to action at the Sundowner Invitational in Monmouth, Oregon, while Western Washington races Saturday in Seattle at the Emerald City Open at Lower Woodland Park.

For her third place performance at last week’s Central Washington University Apple Ridge Invitational in Yakima, the Vikings’ Jane Barr was named GNAC cross country athlete of the week.

The Viking women’s team moved up two spots in the latest USTFCCCA national rankings to number 15, while the men’s squad advanced seven spots to number 17.
