Kara Winger uses sixth round throw to win women's javelin at The Match...

MINSK, Belarus—Vancouver native Kara Winger (left/photo by Paul Merca) used a final round throw to overtake Tatsiana Khaladovich of Belarus and Team Europe to win the women’s javelin at day one of The Match pitting Team USATF against Team Europe in a dual meet format.

Winger, the three time US Olympian from Skyview HS started slowly, throwing 194-3 (59.20m) in round one, then moved to the lead in the second round with a throw of 204-5 (62.31m).

Khaladovich took the back in the third round with a throw of 211-4 (64.41m), which held up until the final round, when Winger unleashed her winning toss of 212-0 (64.63m) to give Team USATF 9 points for the win (9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1), and the first place prize of €7000 ($7731 USD).

In the women’s pole vault, former Pullman resident Katie Nageotte finished third with a best of 15-5 (4.70m) in the eight-total jump format implemented for this competition.

Nageotte needed two attempts to clear her opening height of 14-9 (4.50m), then an additional two to get 15-5 (4.70m).

She then missed once at the next height of 15-7 (4.75m), before bowing out after two misses at 15-9 (4.80m).

Anzhelika Sidorova of Russia & Team Europe won with a clearance of 15-11 (4.85m), using six total attempts, as Team Europe went 1-2. Defending world and Olympic champ Katerina Stefanidi of Greece got Team Europe 7 points with her second place finish at 15-5 (4.70m).

Team Europe holds a narrow 328-312 lead after 18 events, with 19 events remaining, including the final event, the co-ed medley relay, which takes the place of the 4 x 400 relay for men & women.

Competing Tuesday are Pasco HS alum Marisa Howard, Washington alum Mel Lawrence, and Washington State grad Caroline Austin in the women’s 3000 steeplechase; Brannon Kidder of the Brooks Beasts in the men’s 800; Washington alum Katie Mackey in the women’s 1500; and former Emerald Ridge HS standout Hassan Mead in the men’s 3000.

BROOKS-JOHNSON NAMED TO THORPE CUP TEAM; CENTRO TUNES UP FOR WORLDS WITH 5000 TUESDAY NIGHT…

Washington State University alum Alissa Brooks-Johnson was announced by USA Track & Field as one of seven women that will compete in the annual Thorpe Cup combined events dual meet against Germany September 14-15 in Bernhauser, Germany.

Brooks-Johnson finished 14th at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon with a two-day total of 5753 points.

The Doty native competed in last year’s Thorpe Cup in Knoxville, Tennessee, scoring 5868 points to finish fourth.

Meanwhile, University of Washington volunteer coach and reigning Olympic 1500 meter champ Matthew Centrowitz will tune up for this month’s world championships in Doha by running the 5000 meters Tuesday night at the Michael Johnson track on the Nike campus in Beaverton, Oregon.

In addition to Centrowitz, the field includes reigning Toyota USATF Outdoor 5000 & 10000 champ Lopez Lomong, and University of Portland alum Woody Kincaid, who finished third in the 5000 at the national championships, but won’t go to Doha, as he didn’t have the world championships standard.
