Centrowitz tunes up for Doha by running tenth fastest 5000m in American history...
BEAVERTON, Oregon—University of Washington volunteer coach Matthew Centrowitz (left/photo by Paul Merca) of the Nike Bowerman TC sharpened up for the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Doha later this month by setting a personal best in the 5000 meters at the Portland 5000 Tuesday night at the Michael Johnson Track on the Nike world campus.
Centrowitz, the reigning Olympic champion in the 1500 meters, dropped his personal best from 13:20.06 set in 2014 to 13:00.39.
University of Portland alum Woody Kincaid of the Nike Bowerman TC, who finished third at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in this event but is staying home because he lacked the qualifying standard, won in a personal best 12:58.10.
Finishing second was national champion Lopez Lomong, who like Centrowitz, is sharpening up for Doha, but in the 10000 meters, as he ran a personal best 13:00.13.
The race was set up by Washington volunteer coach Amos Bartelsmeyer, who led the race for the first 4 1/2 laps, before ceding the lead to Mo Ahmed of Canada, who led the race until he dropped out with 2 laps to go.
Kincaid became the eighth man to break 13 minutes in American history, passing Bob Kennedy, who set the American record in 1996 (12:58.21).
Lomong, the 2008 Olympic team flag bearer, became the ninth best performer in American history, while Centrowitz became the tenth fastest American with Tuesday night’s performance.
Kincaid, Lomong, and Centrowitz all now possess the Olympic qualifying standard for Tokyo 2020.

CARLEY THOMAS NAMED TO AUSTRALIAN TEAM IN 800M FOR DOHA…
University of Washington freshman Carley Thomas was named by Athletics Australia to its team for the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Doha later this month.
Thomas, who ran 2:01.01 at the London Diamond League meet on July 21st, and finished fourth in the Australian championships in April, is the third Australian entry in the 800, as the IAAF filled the field to get 48 runners in the 800 to run the proper number of rounds.
Thomas has been with the Husky cross country team at its cross country preseason training camp in Colorado Springs preparing for the upcoming season.
The University of Washington school record in the 800 is 2:02.97 set by Baylee Mires in 2016.
While they have not been announced by their federations, it appears according to the track & field statistics site tilastopaja.com that former Washington State volunteer coach and Idaho alum Liga Velvere (women’s 800) of Latvia, and current Husky volunteer coach Amos Bartelsmeyer (men’s 1500) of Germany will most likely be in the field for the world championships.
Athletics Australia’s release is available here.
