WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Alissa Brooks-Johnson finishes fifth in Thorpe Cup; Vikings 2nd at CWU Invite...

FILDERSTADT, Germany—Doty native and Washington State University alum Alissa Brooks-Johnson (left/photo by Paul Merca) finished fifth in the Thorpe Cup heptathlon dual meet between Team USATF and Germany Sunday.

The former Pac-12 champ and All-American for the Cougs, who started the day in seventh with 3382 points after four events, began day two by jumping a best of 19-3.25 (5.87m) to score 810 points.

In event number six, she threw the javelin 133-5 (40.67m) to pick up 680 points.

Brooks-Johnson closed out the competition by running 2:21.50 in the 800 meters to score 803 points for a final total of 5675 points, which was the lowest score of the five heptathlons completed this season.

Anna Maiwald of Germany maintained her first day lead to win the overall competition with a final score of 5941 points. Emilyn Dearman of Team USATF, who was tied with Malwald at the break, was second overall with 5894 points.

In the heptathlon competition, Team USATF won the Thorpe Cup over Team Germany with a final score of 28419 (five scorers) to 28245, with Brooks-Johnson the third scoring team member.

In Yakima Saturday, the Western Washington University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2019 season, with both placing second at the CWU Invitational at Apple Ridge Run.

The Viking women, currently ranked #17 in the USTFCCCA D2 pre-season poll, scored 42 points with three finishing in the top 10 and all five scoring runners in the top 15 in the women’s 4k race. Trinity Western from Vancouver won with 27 points, including a 1-2 finish.

The Vikings were led by junior Jane Barr, who was third with a time of 15:15. Junior Tovah Swartz-Ireland was fourth in 15:24 and sophomore Rebecca Lehman fifth in 15:29.

Host Central Washington was fourth with 123 points, as Lily Tyrell was their first runner across the line in 20th place in 15:55, while Saint Martin’s was sixth overall in the six-team field with 168.

The Saints were led by freshman Elaina Hansen’s 30th place finish in 16:22.

Joanna Williams of Trinity Western was the overall winner in 14:52.

In the men’s 6k race, Western Washington, currently at #24 in the pre-season USTFCCCA D2 national rankings, lost out to number 13 Simon Fraser by a 29-46 count.

Sophomore Macauley Franks led the way for WWU placing fifth in 19:27. Redshirt freshman Alec Ritter was sixth in 19:28 and junior Eric Hamel placed 12th in 19:38.

Host Central Washington was third with 100 points, eight points better than Saint Martin’s 108 for fourth place.

Freshman Nick Sarysz was the first runner across the line for Saint Martin’s in 20th place in 20:01, while junior Donovan Barnhart was the top runner for Central Washington in 23rd place, running 20:05.
