Amina Maatoug finishes second in 1500m in Lignano, setting a personal best...

LIGNANO, Italy--
Recent Washington grad Amina Maatoug (Paul Merca photo) ran to a solid second place finish in the women's 1500 meters at the 36th Meeting Internazional Sport e Solidarietà Sunday evening.

With Husky teammate Mia Cochran running up front as the pacesetter, Cochran took the field through 800 meters in 2:11.1 before ceding the lead to Providence senior Kimberly May of New Zealand.

May, who finished sixth in the finals of the NCAA 1500 meters, took charge once Cochran stepped aside.

Maatoug, a Dutch citizen, appeared to take a run at May, but in the end, May hung on for the victory in a personal best of 4:04.40.

Maatoug was rewarded with a personal best in 4:05.67, while fellow Husky Maggie Liebich also cashed in with a personal best of 4:08.59 in fourth.

Liebich already has the automatic qualifying standard for the USA championships at the end of the month in the steeplechase. Liebich's mark is just over two seconds short of the automatic standard of 4:06.00.

Maatoug's mark ranks her third among runners from The Netherlands.

In the men's 1500, Washington grad Ronan McMahon-Staggs finished ninth in a time of 3:38.92, as Great Britain's Henry McLuckie won in a personal best of 3:35.42.

Competing in her first race since the NCAA championships last month, current Husky Chloe Foerster finished sixth in the women's 800m.

The Big Ten indoor champion at this distance, Foerster ran 2:02.34, her second fastest time this season. It was short of her personal best of 2:00.52 set at the Stanford Invitational in April.

Bändere Oboya of Australia took the win in 2:00.04.

Meanwhile in Edmonton, Washington grad transfer Justin O'Toole finished second in the men's 800 meters at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational at Foote Field Sunday.

O'Toole, who became eligible to represent Canada in international competition last year, ran a personal best 1:46.18, as Olympian Handal Roban of Penn State and St. Vincent & The Grenadines won in 1:45.82.
