Batt-Doyle runs a season best, while Fulton and Maatoug earn personal bests in 5000m in Liege...

LIEGE, Belgium--
Washington alums Eleanor Fulton and Izzi Batt-Doyle (left & second from left/photo courtesy UW Athletics) came to the Meeting International d’Athlétisme de la Province de Liège for a shot at getting the world championships standard of 14:50.00 in the women's 5000.

Amina Maatoug came to Liege to run fast.

Batt-Doyle finished fifth, while Fulton was seventh and Maatoug eleventh Wednesday on a beautiful evening in a very competitive race.

Current Husky Chloe Foerster was the designated pace setter for the race, as she took the field through the first kilometer in 2:58, and kept going through the seven-minute mark before pulling off the track.

Batt-Doyle, who already has the Tokyo world championships standard in the marathon, was determined to keep the pace rolling in order to get under the 14:50 automatic mark. The Australian qualified for the Olympics in this event last year when she ran 14:49.75 in this very same meet, after being passed over for the Paris Games in the marathon.

The field was just slightly behind 14:50 pace entering the bell lap, with Batt-Doyle leading and Klara Lukan of Slovenia a half step behind.

Fellow Australian Maudie Skyring took the win in a personal best 14:49.93, with Lukan second in 14:50.40.

Belgium's Elise Vanderelst was third in 14:51.13, followed by Sweden's Sarah Lahti in 14:52.69, then Batt-Doyle in fifth at 14:52.69.

Fulton was fifth in 15:15.82 in a personal best, beating her old mark of 15:19.19 set in 2022.

Maatoug was rewarded with a 12th place finish in a big personal best and Washington school record 15:22.81, taking down her old personal best of 15:35.93 set in June at the NCAA championships.
