WEEKEND ROUNDUP: UW's David-Smith fourth in 5000; Cosculluela seventh in heptathlon at Euro U23 Champs...
In Bergen, Norway, Washington rising senior Julia David-Smith (photo courtesy UW Athletics) finished fourth in the women's 5000 meters at the European Athletics Under-23 Championships Sunday.
David-Smith, competing on a warm but muggy afternoon with temperatures in the mid 80's, was in the lead group for most of the race, which was led by Big Ten rival Anika Thompson of Ireland and the University of Oregon.
With a few laps remaining, Thompson, who had won the 10000 earlier in the meet, lost the lead to Spain's Maria Forero, the meet's top seed.
Forero won with a time of 15:43.44, with Germany's Vanessa Mikitenko second in 15:51.97, and Thompson third in 15:56.80.
David-Smith crossed the line in 16:00.62 to finish fourth, just outside the podium.
Washington rising sophomore Sofia Cosculluela (photo courtesy Spanish Athletics Federation/AtletismoRFEA) moved up from eleventh after day one to finish seventh in the heptathlon, with a final score of 5845 points.
Cosculluela, the reigning Spanish national champion, started the day with 3463 points, and got off to a solid start in the long jump, going 19-11.75 (6.09m) to move to eighth overall.
In the javelin, Cosculluela, who has a personal best of 160-8 (48.97m) set at the NCAA championships, probably had her most disappointing performance of the two day competition, only throwing 133-9 (40.77m). With that, she moved into seventh with one event remaining.
The Spaniard, who is not the strongest at 800, finished the day with a season best, running 2:20.07.
Pre-meet favorite Saga Vanninen of Finland won with a national and meet record score of 6563 points, currently the third best score in the world this season.
In Heusden, Belgium, Washington alum Kieran Lumb ran the second fastest time by a Canadian over 5000 meters this season in winning the B section of that event at the Nacht van de Atletiek Meeting Saturday.
Lumb ran 13:12.54 to hold off the USA's Marco Langdon, who was second in 13:12.89.
In the top section, Washington alum Brian Fay of Ireland finished second, running a season best 13:08.25, as Belgium's Isaac Kimeli won in 13:01.39.
Fay's mark is the fastest in Ireland so far this season.
In Portland Saturday night, Teagan Schein-Becker of the Brooks Beasts had the top mark of the evening with her third place finish in the top section of the women's 800 meters at the Stumptown Twilight meet at Lewis & Clark College.
Schein-Becker ran 2:00.64 for third, as BYU's Riley Chamberlain won in 1:59.75.
In the second section, Washington grad transfer Claire Yerby won in a personal best 2:02.25.
The men's 800 saw Seattle resident Sam Prakel finish fifth in the top section in 1:46.21, while NCAA 1500m champ and Washington alum Nathan Green was seventh in 1:46.71.
UW grad student Eric Gibson was third in a personal best 1:48.90.
In the women's 1500, former Seattle Pacific All-American Kaylee Mitchell dropped down in distance to set a personal best, running 4:06.39 to finish third.
Former Brooks Beast Allie Ostrander won the steeplechase in a solo effort, going 9:35.11 in her season debut at the distance.
