Jami Schlueter finishes seventh in Commonwealth Games decathlon in Nigerian debut...
GLASGOW, Scotland--Washington alum Jami Schlueter (Paul Merca file photo) finished seventh in the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games Friday at Scotstoun Stadium.
Schlueter, competing internationally for the first time representing Nigeria after switching from Great Britain, started day two in fourth place coming out of the break with 4196 points.
He started his day by running 14.56 in the 110 hurdles. In the discus, he threw nearly seven meters off of his personal best of 141-8 (43.18m) set last month by throwing 121-1 (36.92m) which dropped him to fifth in the overall standings.
The Nigerian cleared 15-1 (4.60m) in the pole vault, but dropped to sixth in the overall standings.
His throwing struggles continued in the javelin, as he finished tenth with a best of 144-10 (44.16m).
In the 1500, Schlueter finished eighth with a time of 4:41.54, just off of his season best of 4:38.38.
Schlueter finished seventh overall with a final score of 7655 points, as Grenada's Lindon Victor overtook first day leader Damian Warner of Canada to win with a final score of 8096 points to Warner's 8036.
Saturday, Josh Kerr of the Brooks Beasts, representing the host Scottish team, goes in the Commonwealth Mile, where the new world record holder is one of the favorites.
He'll go against a field that includes former Husky Sam Tanner of New Zealand, along with Australia's Cam Myers, fellow Scot and former world champion Jake Wightman, and Kenya's former world champion and Olympic silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot.
The race, which is one of the most anticipated events of the entire Commonwealth Games, goes off at 12:55 pm Pacific/8:55 pm local time.
Former WSU Cougar Rosemary Longisa of Kenya runs in the finals of the women's Commonwealth Mile fifty minutes later. She'll face a field that includes former Oregon standout and Olympic medalist Jessica Hull and her Australian teammate Abbey Caldwell, Canada's Lucia Stafford and Simone Plourde, and hometown Scottish favorites Jemma Reekie and Sarah Calvert.
NATIONAL TEAM ANNOUNCEMENTS...
The reigning NCAA champion finished second in the Spanish national championships last week, scoring 6019 points.
Washington redshirt freshman Owen Powell was officially named by USA Track & Field to its team for the World Athletics Under-20 championships that begin Wednesday in Eugene.
Powell, who was third at the national U20 champs last month, got under the standard of 8:04 in Cork, Ireland on July 8th when he ran 7:59.94. Noah Bontrager, who won the national championships in June, but didn't have the standard, got the standard on July 18th when he ran 8:02.39 in Philadelphia.
Spokane's Simon Rosselli, who attended Mead HS and won the USA U20 discus crown when he threw 205-7 (62.67m) was also officially named by USATF to the world championship team.
Incoming Washington freshmen Milla Roberts of Australia and Sherry Drury of Japan were named by their federations to compete at the World Athletics Under-20 championships. Both will run the women's 1500.
Lake Washington HS graduate Yevhen Zhmailo, who will attend Oklahoma this fall, was named by Ukraine's federation to its team, as he'll compete in the triple jump. He set the national high school indoor record in the event when he bounded 52-9.5 (16.09m) at the Spokane HS Invitational at The Podium in January.
