Joe Waskom breaks through with 1500m PB in Budapest...
BUDAPEST, Hungary--Washington alum Joe Waskom (Paul Merca photo) may have run the breakthrough race he needed to run Tuesday night at the Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix.
Returning to the the same venue where he ran in his first world championships, Waskom recorded a 3:32.52 in the 1500 meters to place seventh.
Phanuel Koech of Kenya won the race in 3:31.09, setting a new meet record, as the first six finishers all broke 3:32.
Waskom, a two time NCAA champion in the 1500, had been stuck with a personal best of 3:33.74 set two years ago at the US Olympic Trials. So far this season, he's appeared to race himself into form, having lined up close to twenty times this season. After this race, he is rounding into form at the right time, with the USA championships coming up next week in New York.
In other events, Washington State alum CJ Allen finished eighth in the men's 400 hurdles, running 48.87.
Emil Agyekum of Germany won the race in 47.58.
Another former Cougar, Mason Lawyer, was seventh in the men's 200, running 20.72, as Yassine Hssine of Morocco won in 19.92.
In Burnaby, British Columbia, Sam Whitmarsh of the Brooks Beasts finished third in the top section of the men's 800 to highlight competition at the Harry Jerome Track Classic at Swangard Stadium Tuesday night.
Whitmarsh ran 1:46,28, as Allon Clay of Japan won in 1:44.51.
Washington alum Eleanor Fulton dropped down in distance to 800 meters and finished sixth in 2:07.54. Penn State's Boh Ritchie of New Zealand won in 2:02.46.
Washington alum Claire Yerby finished eighth in the women's 1500, running 4:16.19.
Canada's Maggie Smith won decisively in 4:10.74.
DAVID-SMITH, MAATOUG & REINA ENTERED IN LIEGE WEDNESDAY...
Current Washington Husky Julia David-Smith and recent grads Reuben Reina Jr and Amina Maatoug are all entered in Wednesday's Meeting International d'Athlétisme de la Province de Liège in Belgium.
David-Smith, who only has cross country eligibility remaining, is entered in the women's 5000 along with Maatoug, while Reina is entered in the men's 1500.
