Reuben Reina Jr and Amina Maatoug both get wins Wednesday in Cork...
CORK, Ireland--Washington's Reuben Reina Jr, (second from left/European Athletics screenshot) and alum Amina Maatoug each won their events Wednesday night at the Cork City Sports International Athletics meeting at the MTU Athletics Stadium.
Reina, who finished eleventh at the NCAA championships last month, bided his time while the pacer took the field out.
Once the pacer pulled off the track, Reina moved to the front, tucking in behind Great Britain's Adam Fogg.
Reina appeared to get dropped by Fogg and compatriot Ted Higgins, but as they came off the final turn, he swung out and split the two Brits to take the victory in 3:54.08.
Higgins was second in 3:54.61, and Fogg was third in 3:55.13.
Reina's Husky teammate Thomas Diamond was sixth in 4:00.62.
In the women's 3000, Washington alum Amina Maatoug took the win, running 8:45.72, close to her personal best.
Washington's Julia David-Smith was third in a personal best 8:46.90, and teammate Mia Cochran was eighth in 8:53.34.
David-Smith and Cochran move to second and third on the Washington all-time list with their times, behind Maatoug's mark from 2025.
Washington redshirt freshman Owen Powell finishes in a tie for sixth in the men's 3000 in a personal best of 7:59.94.
More importantly, Powell, who finished third in the 3000 at the USA U-20 championships in Eugene a few weeks ago, dipped under the World Athletics qualifying standard for the U20 championships in Eugene in August.
As Noah Bontrager and Grady Lenn, who both finished ahead of Powell at the US championships do not hold the qualifying standard of 8:04.00, Powell has to wait until the qualifying period ends on July 18th before his spot on the team is confirmed, as the two ahead of him can also chase the 8:04 time standard.
Husky grads Sophie O'Sullivan and Chloe Foerster finished third and seventh in the women's 800
O'Sullivan, a two time world championships qualifier, a Paris Olympian, and last year's NCAA 1500 meter champion, dropped down in distance and ran a season best 2:01.33.
Foerster finished in a time of 2:02.18.
Many of the athletes who competed in Cork will move on to Dublin for Friday's Morton Games, which like the Cork City meet, is a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze level meet.
Among those entered in the Morton Games with Washington connections include Seattle resident Sam Prakel, UW alum Ronan McMahon-Staggs, and current Husky Thomas Diamond in the featured men's Morton Mile; Washington alum and Irish national record holder Brian Fay in the 5000; incoming UW freshman Saoirse Firzgerald in the women's 800; and alums Sophie O'Sullivan, Amina Maatoug, Julia David-Smith, and Chloe Foerster in the 1500.
paulmerca.blogspot.com will be on the ground to cover the Morton Games, as well as next week's Novuna London Athletics meet, which is part of the season long Wanda Diamond League series.
