WEEKEND WRAP: Past and current Dawgs in Heusden, plus Husky trio selected for World U20 champs...

While our focus over the weekend was in London at the Novuna London Athletics Meet, the eleventh stop on the Wanda Diamond League series, there was one significant meet of note involving athletes with ties to the state of Washington.

At the Nacht van de Atletiek (Night of Athletics) meeting, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meet at Stadion De Veen.(Night of Athletics), former Husky Sam Tanner (Paul Merca file photo) took the victory in the men's 1500 meters.

Tanner took the race in a time of 3:33.57.

In the same section, Washington alum Aaron Ahl was eleventh in 3:38.86.

The B section of the men's 1500 saw Washington senior Reuben Reina Jr finish third in a personal best 3:35.85.

In another section of the men's 1500, Washington's Tyler Bilyard won his heat in 3:39.39, while Thomas Diamond was eighth in the heat in 3:42.40.

Washington's Mia Cochran won her heat of the women's 1500 in 4:10.53, while in the top section, UW alum Amina Maatoug was seventh in 4:01.17.

IN OTHER NOTES...

Additionally, Ireland named Saoirse Fitzgerald to its team in the 800 meters, after running the third fastest U20 800 time in Irish history at the Morton Games in Dublin, clocking 2:03.52.

Others may be named before the meet begins August 5th in Eugene at Hayward Field, the most notable being Washington redshirt freshman Owen Powell in the men's 3000 for the USA. Powell, who was third at the USATF national championships in June, got under the qualifying standard in Cork, Ireland on July 7th.

The qualifying period for the world U20 championships ended Sunday.

NOTE: World Athletics, the Nacht van de Atletiek (Night of Athletics) Meeting, and the federations of Canada, France and Ireland contributed to this report.
